About Wardha

This district seat in Maharashtra sits near the Wardha River, in a cotton-growing part of the Deccan. Its name is tied less to its size than to Sevagram, the village just outside town where Mohandas Gandhi set up his ashram in 1936 and ran much of his political work in the years before independence.

THE INTERNATIONAL REVIEW

Dunlop Synthetic Gut in 18 gauge, supplied as a single set — 40 feet, enough for one racquet.

The construction is the standard synthetic gut: a solid nylon centre core inside wear-resistant outer wraps. The core is what keeps the response consistent from the first ball to the hundredth, and the wraps take the abrasion where the strings saw across one another. Between gauges nothing changes except the diameter.

At 1.20 mm this is the thinnest of the three, and the thinnest string is the most responsive one. It wraps further around the ball at contact, moves more freely between the crosses, and returns more feel and more spin than 16 or 17 gauge will. The cost is life: there is less material to lose, so the bed reaches the end of its usable tension and its notching sooner.

A player who chooses 18 gauge has decided that feel is worth restringing for.

Wardha lies inland in central India, where the pre-monsoon months are among the hottest and driest anywhere in the country and courts carry fine dust.

Dust is abrasive, and a thin gauge is the first thing on court to notice it.

LET Dunlop Synthetic Gut 18g Tennis String Set SHOW YOU Wardha

String: Dunlop Synthetic Gut 18g Tennis Strings Set: I know these huts with nobody in them, and mud and bamboo go very quiet after dark. This was Mahatma Gandhi's home and headquarters from 1936 until his final years. The industrialist and disciple Jamnalal Bajaj invited him to the region, and he settled at sixty-seven in a village he renamed Sevagram, the village of service, building simple huts of local mud, bamboo and thatch. From Adi Niwas and Bapu Kuti, his austere quarters, he directed the national movement, received Congress leaders and viceroys' emissaries, and developed khadi spinning, basic education and village industries; the run-up to Quit India in 1942 took shape here. It is preserved as he left it, prayer ground, huts and personal effects intact.

String: Dunlop Synthetic Gut 18g Tennis Strings Set: After closing, the spinning wheels stand in rows and the room sounds like a workshop waiting for morning. Gandhi founded this museum of village industries himself, opening it on 30 December 1938 and naming it for his nephew and devoted co-worker Maganlal Gandhi, the practical genius of his ashrams, who had died in 1928. It was conceived as a living showcase for the All India Village Industries Association, headquartered at Wardha under Gandhi's direction: spinning wheels at every stage of development, handlooms, oil presses, paper-making and pottery equipment, village craft. A laboratory where artisans' techniques were studied and improved. It runs today as a centre for sustainable rural technology and Gandhian science.

String: Dunlop Synthetic Gut 18g Tennis Strings Set: A few kilometres out on the bank of the Dham, where the river is the loudest thing left once the road empties. Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Gandhi's foremost spiritual disciple, established this ashram in 1934, and from it in 1951 he launched the Bhoodan movement, walking village to village across India persuading landowners to gift land to the landless — one of the most remarkable voluntary reform campaigns of the twentieth century. It remained his base until his death here in 1982. He founded the Brahma Vidya Mandir, a community of women dedicated to spiritual life and self-sufficiency, which still maintains it. Vakataka-period sculptures and temple fragments unearthed at Pawnar are set into the ashram walls.

String: Dunlop Synthetic Gut 18g Tennis Strings Set: The white dome holds the last of the light longer than anything else in Wardha, and the drumming carries a long way down an empty road. It is one of the world peace pagodas built by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji, whose founder, the monk Nichidatsu Fujii, met Mahatma Gandhi at Wardha in October 1933; Gandhi, impressed by his dedication to nonviolence, gave him the affectionate name Fujii Guruji, and the order kept a lifelong bond with the town of Gandhi's ashrams. The stupa was completed with the support of the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, its dome bearing gilded statues of the Buddha facing the four directions, with a small Japanese temple beside it where monks drum their prayers for peace.
