This coastal city in southern Lebanon was one of the great Phoenician ports of the eastern Mediterranean. A long-sleeved men’s shirt from Fila’s Essentials line — the core on-court range rather than the seasonal collections — cut with a half-zip placket at the neck.
The zip is the point, and it works as a dial rather than a switch. A crew neck offers one temperature: a player is in it or out of it, and coming out of it mid-set means stopping. A half-zip can be run closed to the throat through the first ten minutes when the body is still cold, opened a couple of inches as the temperature comes up, and opened fully in the third set, all without breaking the line of the shirt or the rhythm of the match.
One garment, three states.
The fabric is finished for moisture management, drawing sweat off the skin and out to the face of the cloth where moving air can take it.
The long sleeve does the job nobody credits it with: it is cloth between the arm and the sun, and unlike sunscreen it does not sweat off over two hours.
Tyre sits on the Mediterranean coast of southern Lebanon, where the sun is direct and the sea breeze is constant — the combination in which a long sleeve is cooler than a bare arm, and an adjustable collar is worth more than a fixed one.
