A longline extends the body down the ribcage — sometimes an inch, sometimes to the waist — which spreads that band pressure over a much wider area.
The practical results are that it sits more stably, that it does not roll up when the arm goes over the head for a high ball, and that it can be worn on its own under an open top without reading as underwear.
Support comes from compression: the fabric and the extended body hold the shape, rather than moulded cups or an underwire doing it.
That is the correct build for low-to-medium impact court work, and it is not the same thing as a high-impact running bra, whatever anyone selling one says.
The fabric is finished for moisture management, moving sweat off the skin to the surface where it evaporates.
