The Radical Jr. 21 is a junior frame in Head’s Radical line, sized for children of roughly four to six years. The 21-inch length is the second step on the junior ladder, between the 19-inch beginner frame and the 23-inch, and is matched to the red-ball stage of the sport’s progression system.
Junior sizing is not cosmetic. A racquet that is too long forces a child to choke up the handle or swing late, and both habits are difficult to undo.
Length is chosen by the child’s height rather than age, and the frame is normally outgrown within a season or two.
The frame is aluminium rather than graphite, which is the correct choice at this size: it is light, it is inexpensive enough to replace as the child grows, and it survives the treatment a racquet gets at this age. It comes pre-strung at a low tension with a large head, giving the biggest possible margin for error, and the grip is sized down to a small hand.
Red-ball play uses a low-compression ball that bounces to about a quarter of a standard ball’s height on a shortened court, so a child can meet the ball at waist height and swing properly instead of reaching over their shoulder.
