That number is a deliberate choice rather than a large-sounding one.
Sweat carries sodium out of the body at a rate plain water cannot replace, and a player who drinks only water during long work in heat dilutes what remains rather than restoring it — which is why heavy sweating followed by heavy drinking can leave someone feeling worse rather than better. A thousand milligrams is built for that case: sustained sweating over hours, not sipping at a desk.
There is no sugar in it at all.
It is sweetened with stevia leaf extract, and the full ingredient list runs to six items, which is unusually short for the category.
