A firm external heel counter and a reinforced midfoot cage resist the foot rolling over the edge of the sole in a lateral cut, which is the movement that turns ankles and destroys uppers.
The toe is wrapped in abrasion-resistant rubber where players drag on the serve.
The midsole runs an EVA compound tuned for support rather than maximum softness — a very soft midsole feels good walking and becomes unstable in a hard plant.

Shoes: One turns one's back on the beach — the beach is a recent affectation — and one attends instead to the fort. Five points, star-shaped, first raised in the seventeenth century, and very far from decorative: for roughly two and a half centuries the Manila galleons crossed the Pacific from the Philippines and set down silk, porcelain and spices at that harbour, annually, for generations. Asia, arriving in the Americas, just there. An earthquake wrecked the place in the 1770s and it was rebuilt, which tells you precisely what the trade was worth to them. It is the city's historical museum now. Everything becomes a museum eventually; one merely hopes to be a well-kept one.
Shoes: Do not call this ancient. It is barely older than my disappointment in the twentieth century. Young men of the town began throwing themselves from that ledge in the 1930s, informally, for reasons of their own, well before anybody thought to arrange it into a show with a ticket price. Thirty-five metres down to a channel that surges and then withdraws, because the water drops away between waves and the depth is not what one would call generous. The jump must be timed to the swell. So it is a question of timing rather than courage — which, if I may, is true of most things worth doing and very nearly all marriages.
Shoes: A pink hotel on a cliff. Restraint, no. Charm, entirely. It was bought in the fifties by a group of Hollywood actors who wanted somewhere that was theirs, Johnny Weissmuller among them — the Tarzan person — who spent his last years in Acapulco and died here in 1984. They keep a room for him still, which I consider the only correct way to treat a guest: one does not evict a man simply because he has stopped arriving. The terraces hang over the Pacific and ask nothing whatever of you. That is the entire design, and I find it perfectly sufficient.
Shoes: We shall take a boat. That small wooded island with the old lighthouse is not really the object of the excursion; the water between here and it is. This bay is one of the great natural deep harbours on the Pacific coast — sheltered, deep, and remarkably difficult to see into from the sea — and that, not the climate and certainly not the nightlife, is why the Spanish settled upon it over anywhere else. Every tower, every terrace and every regrettable illuminated sign in this city is a consequence of that geography. The harbour was the intention. The rest is what occurred while nobody was supervising.
