About Naples

This port city stands on the Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius across the water and the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum nearby. Founded by Greeks as Neapolis, it later became one of the main cities of Roman southern Italy and, for centuries, the capital of the Kingdom of Naples.

THE INTERNATIONAL REVIEW

A rimless shield sunglass from adidas Sport, built as a single continuous curved lens rather than a two-lens frame. The shield form removes the bridge and rim from the field of view, which is the main reason the design is used for running, cycling and racquet sports.

The lenses are polycarbonate, chosen for impact resistance, and are polarised.

Polarisation works by filtering out light of a single orientation — the organised light reflected off flat surfaces such as water, glass and hard courts — so glare is removed rather than dimmed.

The lenses also block ultraviolet light.

Polarisation is most useful where light reflects off hard, pale surfaces: Naples is a city of stone paving and sea, and both throw glare upward as well as down.

The frame is TR-90, a lightweight and flexible thermoplastic, with a twelve-hole ventilation system worked through the frame to reduce fogging when the wearer is warm and stationary. Contact points are non-slip at the temples and the nose pads are adjustable.

The ventilated frame addresses fogging in warm, still air, which is the normal summer condition on the Bay of Naples.

LET adidas Sport Sunglasses SP0019 SHOW YOU Naples

Sunglasses: “Lean closer... Spaccanapoli is not a spell, though it does cut the historic center like a blade, its ruler-straight route tracing the ancient Greek and Roman street plan. Wear these, and at least one shadow in the alley will be you.”

Sunglasses: “Hush... inside the Cappella Sansevero lies the Veiled Christ, carved by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753 from a single block of marble, because apparently marble can pretend to be fabric better than most of us can fold laundry. The truth is stranger, and much better lit through polarized lenses.”

Sunglasses: “Down we go... Napoli Sotterranea leads into ancient Greek cisterns and aqueduct spaces about forty metres below the pavement, which is precisely where your bravest friend suddenly remembers an urgent espresso appointment. The sunglasses stay calm; they have seen darker things, mostly in hotel minibars.”

Sunglasses: “Listen... the National Archaeological Museum holds treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, including mosaics removed from ancient buildings before time could finish its nasty little joke. Even the ghosts admire preservation, though they are terrible about closing display cases.”
