This city on the Shirak plain is Armenia's second largest and the administrative seat of Shirak Province, close to the closed border with Turkey. Known as Alexandropol under the Russian Empire and Leninakan in the Soviet period, it was heavily damaged by the 1988 Spitak earthquake and has rebuilt around rail yards, workshops, and military installations.
THE INTERNATIONAL REVIEW
A can of three yellow balls, low-pressurised and made for courts at 3,500 feet and above, roughly 1,070 metres. It is the altitude specification in Babolat’s Gold family, sitting alongside Gold Championship and Gold All Court, which are the standard-pressure balls for courts nearer sea level.
The problem it solves is air density.
Thin air offers less drag, so a normally pressurised ball flies faster and further and kicks higher off the bounce, and rallies at altitude become a sequence of balls sailing long.
This one answers that at the core rather than at the surface: internal pressure is reduced, so the ball comes off the strings with less of its own stored energy to add to the thinner air, and flight and bounce land closer to what a player is used to lower down.
Construction is felt over a rubber core, with a woven felt specified for all court surfaces rather than for clay or hard courts alone.
Woven felt is the more durable of the two felt constructions, which matters here because a lower-pressure ball is judged on the condition of its felt rather than on how much pressure it has lost.
The 3,500-foot threshold is the whole point of the specification: Gyumri sits at about 1,509 metres, close to 4,950 feet, comfortably inside the range where a standard ball plays long.
It is approved by the ITF, the USTA and the FFT, so it is legal for sanctioned play rather than a practice-only ball. Each can holds three, and cases run to 24 cans and 72 balls for clubs buying in bulk. Manufactured in Thailand.
