The construction is a solid nylon centre core wrapped in wear-resistant outer filaments. The core is what gives the string its consistent response: a solid monofilament centre returns the same behaviour at the hundredth ball as at the first, while the outer wraps absorb the abrasion where the mains saw across the crosses.
That division of labour is why nylon of this type sits in the middle of every scale — reasonable power, reasonable control, reasonable feel, and none of them bought at the expense of another.
Gauge is the decision. Sixteen measures 1.30 mm, the thickest of the three common gauges and the durable one; a thicker string moves less and lasts longer, while a thinner one bites into the ball more and breaks sooner.
Ceyhan lies on the Çukurova plain near Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, where the summers are long, hot and humid and a string bed is played in for months at a stretch rather than cut out after a fortnight.

Yılankale, the Snake Castle, sits on a rock above the Ceyhan River east of Adana, horseshoe towers visible for miles over the Cilician plain — built in the thirteenth century under the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia to guard the trade routes, which means it was guarding somebody's grain, oil and salt going up that road. The Turkish name comes from the Shahmaran, the queen of snakes, half woman half serpent, still told about across the region. Walls, gatehouse, vaulted chambers, all well preserved, and a path up from the plain. Bring something to eat. I have said this before and been ignored.

Sirkeli Höyük, on the Ceyhan where it cuts through the Misis hills, is one of the largest settlement mounds in Cilicia — Chalcolithic straight through the Iron Age and past it, layer on layer, every layer somebody's kitchen fire. Carved into the rock by the water is the great Hittite king Muwatalli II in ceremonial dress, thirteenth century BC, the oldest known Hittite rock relief; the same man who faced Ramesses II at Kadesh. Ritual site, probably, on the Anatolia-to-Syria road. A second relief was deliberately erased — family, honestly. German, Turkish and Swiss teams have dug here since the 1990s.

The Kurtkulağı Caravanserai stands in its village in the Ceyhan district on the old caravan road running from Adana down toward Aleppo and the Syrian lands — dated 1659, patronage of Hüseyin Pasha, architect Mehmet Ağa, one link in the Ottoman chain of stone inns keeping trade and pilgrimage moving across the hot Çukurova. Cut stone, one great vaulted hall, merchants and animals and goods all in behind thick walls for the night. A mosque of the same period nearby. Restored in recent decades. Four hundred years of travellers being fed here and I arrive on the wrong afternoon.

It sat off the main highways but had clean sightlines to Yılankale, Anavarza and Toprakkale — a signalling web across the plain, gossip at the speed of daylight. Inside: complex entrance, vaulted undercrofts, and those cisterns, the garrison's only water. No water, no cooking, no castle. Climb it. Best panorama in Çukurova, and I am starving.
