This old capital stands at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, just north of Tbilisi. It was the political center of the early Georgian kingdom of Iberia until the 5th century, and its churches, including Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, mark its role in the country’s conversion to Christianity.
THE INTERNATIONAL REVIEW
A tennis skort from Lija built in two different fabrics, which is what multi panel describes. The upper portion is Lija’s own ELITE cloth; the lower half is a lightweight tonal mesh, and the two are joined by an asymmetrical seam that runs diagonally across both the front and the back rather than level around the body.
The mesh is the working part. It is opaque, so it screens without being sheer, and it is a mesh, so air passes straight through it at the point where a skirt traps the most heat.
Putting a solid cloth on top and an open one below places ventilation where it is needed and coverage where it is needed, instead of compromising with one fabric for both jobs.
The diagonal join means the transition does not cut a hard horizontal line across the hips.
The body fabric is 92% nylon and 8% elastane with four-way stretch — giving along both axes rather than one, so it moves with a lunge as readily as with a stride — and it wicks moisture and dries fast.
The cut is A-line, opening out from the waist rather than hanging straight, which is the shape that allows an unplanned change of direction.
Mtskheta sits in a hot, dry, bright river valley in eastern Georgia, where the sun is direct off open ground and a UPF-rated, mesh-vented skirt is equipment rather than a preference.

Skort: Skirt: I have boldly reached Svetitskhoveli by the radical expedition method of following a paved street, and there it is behind towered walls. The cathedral’s name is tied to the living pillar tradition, so naturally I am treating every stone like it may have a dramatic backstory.
Skort: Skirt: Forward to Samtavro, an obscure little stop if one ignores everyone who knows Georgian history. Inside the church are the tombs of King Mirian and Queen Nana, the royal couple associated with Georgia’s fourth-century conversion to Christianity.
Skort: Skirt: Bebris Tsikhe looks like a fort that chose the rock above the Aragvi and then refused all casual drop-ins, which I respect. This ruined fourteenth-century stronghold is exactly the sort of discovery best made with sturdy shoes and a suspiciously convenient road.
Skort: Skirt: I have discovered Jvari, a barely noticeable cliff-top church known to almost anyone who has looked up Mtskheta. Built around 600, it stands above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, a superb place for pointing dramatically at water.
