This city on the Traun River was the Roman settlement of Ovilava, a military and administrative point on routes across the Danube lands. It later became a market and trading town, helped by its position between Linz and Salzburg. Emperor Maximilian I died here in 1519, a fact still tied to the city’s place in Habsburg history.

The Halftime Shield is a single-lens wrap: one continuous shield across both eyes rather than two lenses set in a rim.
Removing the bridge and the rim takes the frame out of the central and near-peripheral field, which is the reason the shape is used in racquet sports at all — a ball spends most of its flight in the periphery, and a frame bar in the wrong place costs a half-step.
The lens is polycarbonate, chosen for impact resistance rather than optical prestige, and carries full UVA and UVB protection. The frame is a lightweight injected construction.
Contact points are rubberised at the nose pads and the temple tips, so the hold improves as the wearer sweats instead of degrading, which is the practical difference between a sport frame and a dark fashion one.
Wels lies on the Traun in the flat Alpine foreland of Upper Austria, where the winter sun sits low and comes in almost horizontally down a court. A wrapped shield covers that angle in a way a flat front does not.

In the nineteenth century Wels pulled down its walls and every other gate, and kept this one — the Ledererturm, the tanners' tower, named for the leather workers quartered nearby along the water. A tower guarded this western entrance in the Middle Ages; the present structure with its baroque cap is early seventeenth century. Behind it the Stadtplatz runs to the parish church, one of the handsomest long market squares in Austria, drawn by salt, iron and the Traun crossing. A wall keeps people out. A gate concedes that they are coming.

Documented from the Middle Ages as a seat of authority, this burg was rebuilt across the centuries from defensive work into residence — and on, forgive me, the date, the date... 12 January 1519, Emperor Maximilian I, remembered as the last knight, died within these walls while travelling the region. A man called the last of something, dying inside a building that had stopped being what it was. I could stay here all afternoon. It holds the city museum now: Roman Ovilava, farming, Austrian baking. Concerts in the garden in summer.

The choir here keeps fourteenth-century panels that rank among the important surviving gothic windows of Upper Austria, made for a congregation of merchants and craftsmen who could not read the Latin but could certainly read the light. The foundations reach back to Romanesque work; choir and nave were rebuilt in the fourteenth century as the trading town prospered. The church carried Wels through plague, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, when a strongly Protestant town was returned to Catholic practice. Its tower and the Ledererturm draw the old skyline together. Belief changed hands. The glass did not move.

Joseph II's reforms dissolved the convent in the 1780s and the buildings went to secular use. Restored now for exhibitions, the medieval architecture still fully legible. What survives is what could be used again. That is not cynicism. Probably.
