Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set

This mid-gauge co-polyester built to a tolerance, four corners doing structural work on every stroke. It has surveyed a tour of Thanjavur, checked the footings, and would like to walk you through it while your card is still in your pocket.

A colossal pyramidal granite vimana rising in tapering tiers above a walled courtyard, capped by a single vast domed stone; a huge monolithic Nandi bull in its own pavilion facing the sanctum; carved gopura gateways and long colonnaded cloisters.

Brihadisvara Temple

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set: Granite. That's the first thing wrong here. This delta hasn't got any stone. Not a pebble. So somebody quarried it a considerable distance away and hauled it in — about 216 feet of vimana, laid without mortar. No binder. Nothing but weight and geometry. Rajaraja I, Chola emperor, consecrated it in his nineteenth regnal year: 1009 to 1010 CE. The bull out there is carved from a single block. One. And whoever ran this operation kept records — the walls are covered in Tamil inscriptions listing endowments, staff and treasures in detail, which makes it one of the best-documented medieval buildings anywhere. UNESCO, 1987, Great Living Chola Temples. Airtight file. Rare.

A rambling complex of thick-walled stuccoed halls and courtyards in faded ochre and cream, a tall many-storeyed square arsenal tower over the roofline, a painted vaulted durbar hall, and library rooms of glass cases holding bundled palm-leaf manuscripts.
Stop two

Thanjavur Maratha Palace

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set: Second scene. Multiple owners — always complicates a case. The Nayak rulers began it in the sixteenth century. The Marathas took the seat and held the kingdom from 1674 to 1855. Then 1799: the British annex most of the kingdom, and the Bhonsle family somehow keeps the palace and the fort. Note that. People rarely keep the good part. Layout's a warren, deliberately. Sadar Mahal. Durbar Hall. Queen's Courtyard. Arsenal tower. Bell tower, octagonal, with a view of everything. Today it holds the Royal Palace Museum, the Rajaraja Chola Art Gallery and its Chola bronzes, and the Saraswathi Mahal Library. Three institutions, one roof. Somebody was tidy.

A large square stone-stepped water tank inside a walled fort enclosure, surrounded by a green public park of flowering trees and lawns, with the Big Temple's vimana visible over the treetops.
Stop three

Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Saraswathi Mahal Library

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set: Every case needs a paper trail. This one never went cold. Started under the Nayak kings. Then Serfoji II — ruled 1798 to 1832, scholar in Indian and European learning both — turned it into something else entirely, collecting systematically in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and English. A man reading five languages is a man building a case. Tens of thousands of palm-leaf and paper manuscripts in these cases, tied between boards. Tamil medical treatises. Commentaries on Sangam literature. One of the oldest continuously maintained libraries in Asia — continuously, meaning nobody ever let the file lapse. National research library now. I could work in here.

A white Gothic-arched colonial church with tall pointed windows and a small tower, standing on mown lawns and gardens; inside, a white marble relief panel of a dying man surrounded by mourners.
Stop four

Schwartz Church

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set: Last stop. White church, 1779, standing in garden ground inside the palace precinct instead of out on a street. Buildings set back like that usually have a reason. This one does. Christian Friedrich Schwartz, German-born, Danish Halle mission, spent decades in this town and became tutor and adviser to Serfoji II. Founded St Peter's school here in 1784 as well. Now the detail that closes it. After Schwartz died, Serfoji — a Hindu ruler — commissioned that marble memorial inside, carved by John Flaxman, showing the king at the missionary's bedside. Nobody orders a relief of his own grief unless the grief was real. No mystery here. Just affection.

The Thanjavur, India track

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16L Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

Let us start with the cross-section, because that is where the whole design argument lives. Hyper-G is a co-polyester monofilament with a SQUARE profile — four flat faces and four edges rather than a curve. An edge bites the ball at contact; a round string slides across it. That single geometric decision is why this string produces the spin it does, and it is a decision, not a marketing adjective.

This set is 16L gauge, 1.20 — correction, 1.25mm — the centre of the range and the gauge most full-swing players settle on. Thin enough to pocket the ball and load it, thick enough to survive a serious week.

Solinco builds seven gauges, 15L through 20: 15L (1.35mm), 16 (1.30mm), 16L (1.25mm), 17 (1.20mm), 18 (1.15mm), 19 (1.10mm) and 20 (1.05mm) — the widest gauge range they offer. Go thicker for service life, thinner for bite.

Holding it all together is TruTension, Solinco's tension-maintenance process, so the bed you strung on Tuesday behaves like the bed you strung on Tuesday come Friday. Feel is firm and controlled; the colour is the signature lime green. This is a set: 40 ft / 12.2 m, one full stringing. Reels are 656 ft / 200 m.

Thanjavur will appreciate a string that earns its performance structurally. The Brihadeeswarar vimana has carried 216 feet of granite since 1010 on geometry alone — no mortar, no kings required.

You'll get use out of this everywhere from the courts beside Sivaganga tank to the delta towns down the Kaveri, and by the way, it's also perfect for the Carnatic concert season at Thiruvaiyaru: anything that holds its tuning through a four-hour kutcheri will hold it through your Saturday league.
