adidas Men's Club Polo

Out of the prover crisp and with a clean sheet: ribbed collar, underarm gussets, moisture control that behaves, a droptail hem that stays down when you reach. The city is another story, and Abakan gets walked before anything else, dragged sandstone, a Han roof surviving a Russian winter, carved faces.

Great Salbyk Kurgan

adidas Men's Club Polo: And here we are, out in the Valley of the Kings, and folks, look at the SIZE of those slabs. This is a Tagar culture burial mound, and that sandstone was brought a considerable distance across open steppe. No cranes. No wheels to speak of. People, rope, and a decision. And take a moment with it, because this is a grave, and the scale of the effort tells you precisely what they thought of whoever was inside. Then the 1950s — in come the excavators, the mound is cut down, the ring is exposed, and there it stands in the open for the first time in thousands of years. That is a reveal. Hold onto your hat, by the way. The wind out here is completely unopposed and it has been all afternoon.

Tashebik Han-dynasty palace site

adidas Men's Club Polo: 1940. Roadworkers. Routine job, nothing on the card. And then — ARE YOU KIDDING ME — they hit a building with Chinese roof tiles, Chinese inscriptions and a Han-dynasty floor plan, sitting in the middle of SIBERIA, by the Tasheba river. Nobody saw that coming. Everybody agrees it is extraordinary; nobody agrees whose it was, and that argument has gone to extra time and stayed there. One popular reading connects it to a Han general who ended up living among the Xiongnu. Another prefers an envoy. Another, a marriage alliance. Three theories, all still on court, no result, and honestly? I hope there never is one. What is certain is that somebody two thousand years ago, an enormous distance from home, built himself a roof he recognised.

Khakassia National Museum of Local Lore

adidas Men's Club Polo: Inside, in a hall built specifically to hold them, stand carved stone stelae hauled in off the steppe — faces and horned figures cut by the Okunev culture thousands of years ago — and these are among the OLDEST monumental carvings in the whole of northern Asia. Northern Asia! That is a record-book number and it has not been beaten. Now, the debate up in the stands is whether stones like these belong out in the landscape they were raised in, or in here where the frost cannot flake them apart, and it is a genuinely close call with strong feeling on both sides of the ground. Meanwhile those faces are looking straight back at you, and in all my years I have never once seen a crowd win that exchange.

Cathedral of the Transfiguration, Abakan

adidas Men's Club Polo: A cathedral this size in Abakan is a NEW arrival — raised after 1991, gold domes up, white walls, straight onto Sobornaya Square. Now the context, because context is the whole match: Abakan itself is a young city by Siberian standards, laid out in the twentieth century right where the Abakan meets the Yenisei. So almost nothing here is an inheritance. Almost everything here is somebody's recent decision, taken in living memory, in full public view. And that, for my money, makes this the most honest skyline in the region — no ancient head start, no inherited advantage, every single thing on this square had to be put there by somebody. Heads covered on the way in, please, and let us all keep our voices down inside.

The Abakan, Russia track

adidas Men's Club Polo

Written for this world alone.

The shirt came across my desk on a Tuesday. adidas Men's Club Polo. Piqué weave. Ribbed collar. Clean record. I ran the checks anyway — that is the job. AEROREADY moisture control: confirmed, pulls sweat off the skin before it can talk. Underarm gussets: confirmed, shoulders move free, no restraints.

Droptail hem: sits longer at the back, keeps you covered when you stretch for the wide one. No loose threads. No priors.

Thirty years on the job and I never met a garment this cooperative.

Abakan, Khakassia, out where the Abakan river meets the Yenisei — a young town by Siberian standards, laid out in the twentieth century, which means almost everything standing in it is somebody's recent decision rather than an inheritance. Unusually honest about itself, that place. I have interviewed people who were not.

The city was another matter.

Then the cold case. In 1940 roadworkers outside Abakan turned up a building with Chinese roof tiles, Chinese inscriptions and a Han-dynasty plan, sitting in the middle of Siberia. Everybody agrees it is remarkable. Nobody agrees whose it was — a Han general who ended up living among the Xiongnu, an envoy, a marriage alliance.

I have closed cases on thinner evidence and I have been wrong. What is not in dispute: somebody a very long way from home built themselves a very familiar roof.

North of town it goes further back still. The Great Salbyk Kurgan is a ring of enormous upright sandstone slabs on open steppe in the Valley of the Kings, a Tagar burial mound whose stones were dragged a considerable distance by people with no cranes, exposed in the 1950s when the mound itself was cut down.

This polo gets worn everywhere from a hot afternoon on a hard court in central Abakan to a windy evening out toward the kurgans, and it is also perfect for the visitor who wants to look presentable walking into the Khakassia museum. Wear it. You will match the clean lines.
