The Noyyal River at Tiruppur

Diadem Elevate Tour 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: Okay, so this is the Noyyal, a tributary of the Kaveri, and it is the whole reason the city could develop its dyeing and bleaching industry, which grew up alongside the knitwear trade that made Tiruppur India's largest cotton hosiery centre. India's largest! I checked that twice because I did not trust my own notes. Chola-period stone inscriptions in the region refer to the river and to the fertility of the alluvium it deposits, and the Kongu country it runs through lay on the trade route linking the east and west coasts of southern India in the Roman period. The Roman period. Sorry. The ghats are still in use for rituals and festivals.

Tiruppur Railway Station

Diadem Elevate Tour 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: Right, the station, 1862, and yes I have the year correct, established as an intermediate stop on the Erode-Podanur section built by the Madras Railway Company, part of the broad-gauge trunk route running from Jolarpettai toward Mangalore and the Malabar coast. And here is my favourite fact on the entire tour: the railway is the direct cause of Tiruppur's growth. It turned an agricultural market town into a cotton collection and forwarding point, and that cotton trade became the ginning, spinning and knitwear industry that now dominates the whole city. Thirumuruganatheeswarar Temple, Thirumuruganpoondi

Diadem Elevate Tour 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: I have been practising this one all morning. The Thirumuruganatheeswarar Temple at Thirumuruganpoondi is dedicated to Shiva and is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, the shrines praised in the seventh-century Tamil Saiva hymns of the Tevaram composed by the Nayanmar saint-poets. It is counted the 260th such shrine and the second in the Kongu country. The present stone structure is attributed to the Kongu Cholas in the tenth century, with later additions, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings anywhere in the Tiruppur area. Tenth century, still standing, in a city the world knows for T-shirts. I genuinely love this job.

Nanjarayan Tank Bird Sanctuary

Diadem Elevate Tour 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: Last stop, and it is so new that we are practically the first tour doing it properly. The tank takes its name from a ruler called Nanjarayan who repaired and restored it. It was notified as a bird sanctuary in 2022, becoming Tamil Nadu's seventeenth, covering 1.26 square kilometres, and then designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2024. Two years apart. It is a rare surviving wetland in a heavily industrialised district and it supports large numbers of resident and migratory waterbirds. Sorry, I said seventeenth and I want to make sure everybody caught that, the seventeenth in the whole state.

Tiruppur is India's knitwear capital: a Tamil Nadu city of knitting, dyeing and stitching units whose cotton jersey ends up on shoulders on every continent. It is a place that has built its whole living on a tight, consistent, repeatable weave, which makes it the correct place to talk about a 16 x 20 string bed.

The Elevate Tour 98 V3 is the control frame of Diadem's Elevate line. Head size is 98 square inches / 632 square centimetres. Unstrung weight is 11.1 ounces / 315 grams. Balance is 8 points head-light at 315 millimetres. Length is a standard 27 inches / 68.58 centimetres.

The string pattern is 16 mains by 20 crosses, and the beam is a flat 21.5 millimetres from throat to tip — no tapering, no widened hoop, nothing to add free power you did not ask for. Grips run 4 1/8 (L1), 4 1/4 (L2), 4 3/8 (L3) and 4 1/2 (L4).

Read those numbers together and the frame declares itself. Three hundred and fifteen grams before a string goes in it, eight points head-light, twenty crosses: this is a heavy, stable, low-launch player's racquet that returns exactly the depth you put into it.

The dense pattern keeps the ball down and gives you a predictable string bed that does not shift under load, and the flat box beam keeps the frame from ballooning your targets.

The comfort comes from the construction rather than the geometry — V3 keeps the Flex Stabilization System from the previous Elevate and adds Kraibon, an elastomer used in motorsport and aerospace, worked into the layup to soak up vibration. That is why a 21.5 millimetre box beam at this weight does not play harsh.

You will use it everywhere from a floodlit municipal court in Coimbatore to whatever hard court the mill owners have laid down here, and by the way, if you have ever wondered why Tiruppur people are so exacting about a fabric's hand-feel, spend ten minutes in a dyeing unit watching a batch get checked. Same instinct as a player who restrings at the same tension every two weeks. This racquet is for that person.

Not for everyone, and it should not pretend to be: 315 grams unstrung with a dense pattern asks you to generate your own pace. If your swing is short or your arm is tired, buy the Elevate 98 instead and come back to this one in a year.
