Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set

<p>This is a 1.30 mm coated polyamide monofilament — soft as a held breath, slippery as meltwater, and far more forgiving of an elbow than the polyester you have been quietly suffering. Think of it as a string that would like to read you something first: it asks only for one slow walk through Šalčininkai before you decide.</p>

Šalčininkai, Lithuania
01
best cardiovascular tennis classes — the Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set photographed at the Church of St Peter the Apostle in Šalčininkai, Lithuania — a plain, solid, light-plastered masonry church of 1835 with a low tower, set behind a walled churchyard of old lime trees in the centre of town. Camera very low near the flagstones by the churchyard gate, looking up the path into the raking amber light of a spring sunrise, frost still white in the shadow of the wall. The first Mass has just ended: older women in headscarves are coming out and stopping in twos to talk, a man is lifting a bicycle over the step, a boy is sprinting ahead down the path, and rooks are going up out of the limes. The string set lies close in the near foreground on a worn stone step, untouched.

Šalčininkai Manor

Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set: Lot one, the manor. First recorded fourteenth century — do I hear more? Hlebavičius family, fifteenth and sixteenth; Chodkiewicz family, seventeenth and eighteenth; going, going, 1835, hammer down to Karol Ferdynand Wagner, Prussian, family in town since 1823. Son Olgierd starts a neoclassical palace to designs by the German architect Hetzchold, bolted onto the older eighteenth-century manor house, and in 1880 Witold Wagner puts up the two-storey neo-Renaissance palace you are looking at. Two porticos. Central heating and electric light by 1904. Wagners hold it to 1939, then a hospital, and now the Stanisław Moniuszko School of Arts. No reserve.

best cardiovascular tennis classes — the Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set photographed at Jašiūnai Manor north of Šalčininkai, Lithuania — a long white late-neoclassical palace with a tall four-column portico, an octagonal pavilion at one side and a landscaped park running toward the River Merkys. Eye level, straight on across the gravel forecourt, hard bright midsummer sun and sharp black shadow under the portico. A chamber concert is turning out: musicians carrying instrument cases down the steps, a woman shaking out a picnic blanket on the lawn, children running a circuit round the pavilion, and a gardener mid-swing with a strimmer at the edge of the park. The string set rests on a painted iron park bench in the middle distance, off to one side, unnoticed.

Church of St Peter the Apostle

Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set: Parish founded 1410, first church built with it, there is your opening bid. 1523, Jonas Hlebavičius and his wife Ona endow it with land and property; around 1622 the Vilnius official Jonas Alfonsas Lackis restores and enlarges that endowment, bidding it up. Then 1812 — fire, church and archive together, withdrawn from the sale entirely. Present building 1835, rendered brick masonry, wooden annexes, rectangular, roughly ten metres by six, and at that size I call it a steal. Burns again 1944. Reconstructed 1949. Enlarged 1986. Exterior, windows, roof restored 2010. Four Tuscan columns, one pediment. Sold.

03
best cardiovascular tennis classes — the Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set photographed at Norviliškės Castle in the far east of Šalčininkai district, Lithuania — a long white fortified Renaissance monastery with a squat gate tower and small windows, standing in open meadow and forest with the Belarusian border fence running along the edge of its grounds. Camera high on the meadow slope looking down, very wide with the building small in the frame at blue hour on a still winter evening, snow on the fields holding the last violet light and the fence line ruled dead straight across the white. A border guard's vehicle is moving slowly along the track, a groundsman is carrying logs to a door with his breath showing, and crows are settling in the bare trees. The string set sits on a bare stone parapet at the top of the slope, small and far from anyone.

Šalčininkai Manor Park

Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set: Now the grounds, and I want you valuing what stands in them. Lime avenues, ruler-straight. Broadleafs old enough to have opinions. One pond, still, doing all the reflecting free of charge. This is the surviving parkland of the Šalčininkai estate, first mentioned in the fourteenth century, remodelled by the Wagner family who owned it from 1835 until 1939, and its present form belongs to the nineteenth-century rebuilding around the palace of 1880. Today it is the setting for the arts school that occupies the palace and the town's principal area of old parkland. Nobody ever bids on grass. Their loss.

04
best cardiovascular tennis classes — the Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set photographed in the Dieveniškės Historical Regional Park in eastern Šalčininkai district, Lithuania — old wooden ethnographic villages with carved eaves, enormous solitary oaks, named boulders and prehistoric burial mounds filling the narrow salient called the Dieveniškės Loop. Close and intimate, shallow depth of field, dusk in warm steady rain at the end of summer: a lamp on in a wooden farmhouse window, a woman on the porch shelling beans into a bowl, a dog shaking itself in the yard, rain running off carved eaves in threads and mist standing over the wet meadow. The string set sits mid-frame on the worn timber rail of the porch, beaded with rain, an ancient oak off centre behind it.

The Šalčia River

Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set: Small, dark, slow. No embankment, no quay, one ordinary road bridge — and it named the entire town, so let us talk value. The Lithuanian root is šaltas, meaning cold. Šalčininkai first appears in 1311 as a settlement on it. Nicholas of Šalčininkai, born here in 1420, goes on to Bishop of Vilnius, 1453 to 1467, fourteen years on that seat, do I hear more? Town status granted 1956, seat of the Šalčininkai district municipality, population majority Polish. Everything you have looked at today came out of this stream. Sold, to the river.

Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

<p>Šalčininkai takes its name from the Šalčia, and Šalčia comes from <em>šalta</em> — cold. A town named after cold water, which is as good an image as any for a string that keeps its head. Diadem Evolution is a polyamide monofilament finished with a low-friction silicone-based coating.

It is not a polyester and it is not a multifilament; it is one solid nylon-family filament with a slippery skin, and that skin is the whole trick — the string slides through the crosses like a river under ice instead of grinding at every intersection.</p><p>This is the 16, 1.30 mm, the middle of the three gauges Evolution is made in: 17 (1.25 mm) for response, 16 (1.30 mm) for the balance, 15L (1.35 mm) for life.

The 1.30 is the one to reach for if you do not already know which you want.

The set is 40 feet — 12.2 metres — and the colours are Natural, Black, Azure Blue and Pink.</p><p>Diadem describe it as precision, comfort and easy power, and it was built deliberately to survive contact with the sharp edges of hard shaped polyesters, which is why it is such a reliable partner in a hybrid; the Tennis Industry Association has rated it a top string.

What it feels like, honestly, is a string that gives you the ball back rather than an argument — responsive, cushioned, and far easier on an elbow than the poly you may have been enduring.

You will use it everywhere from a summer afternoon by the ponds on the Šalčia to a frozen November morning under the pines of the Šalčininkai forest, and by the way, it is exactly right for a town where the correct answer to a hot day is a bowl of šaltibarščiai — cold, pink, and much kinder than it looks.</p><p>Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set</p><p>Come join the Diadem Evolution 16g Tennis String Set for a tour of Šalčininkai.</p><p>
