Stop one
Bandirma Vapuru Museum Ship
Babolat Xplore 15L Tennis String Set: A hull, sitting on dry land, and I want to be precise about what you are actually looking at. On the nineteenth of May 1919 the steamer Bandirma landed Mustafa Kemal at Samsun, and the Turkish War of Independence began from this quay; that date is now a national holiday. The original vessel was broken up long ago. What stands here is a full-size replica, built to the same lines, with the museum fitted inside the hull. A replica is not a fake — it is a reconstruction to drawing, and once the steel is gone it is the only method left for preserving a shape. Now note the size of her. That is the detail that gets engineers. Not a warship. A modest coastal steamer, adequate to its load, and the load happened to be a country.

Stop two
Amisos Hill (Amisos Tepesi)
Babolat Xplore 15L Tennis String Set: We are going up by cable car, which means somebody had to span a moving load up this hillside and hold it there, and I would like that acknowledged before we discuss anybody's tomb. At the top: Hellenistic chamber tombs cut into the hill, and what came out of them was gold — jewellery, a crown, ornaments, the Amisos treasure, now displayed in the city museum. This was Amisos, a Greek colony, later part of the Pontic kingdom, then Rome. There is also a reconstructed Amazon village up here, put up by the tourist board because legend places the Amazons on this coast; the carpentry is sound and the history is not. The view over the Black Sea is the genuine article, and that one is geology's work rather than ours.

Stop three
Samsun Archaeology and Ethnography Museum
Babolat Xplore 15L Tennis String Set: The mosaic first. That is a Roman floor — Achilles at Skyros, with the four seasons worked into the corners — and it was lifted whole and brought in here, which is the part nobody thinks about. Tens of thousands of tesserae, every one bedded in mortar, and somebody had to face it, cut it, support it and move it without losing the picture. That is a rigging problem as much as an archaeological one. Beside it, the Amisos gold: the crown, the earrings, the medallions, worked to a fineness that tells you the tooling was better than most people assume for the period. Everything in this hall was buried by people who fully intended it to stay buried. The retrieval was the harder engineering.

Stop four
Onur Aniti (Honour Monument)
Babolat Xplore 15L Tennis String Set: Here is a real problem, solved in bronze. Equestrian statue of Atatürk, unveiled in 1932, sculpted by the Austrian Heinrich Krippel, and the horse is rearing — front legs clear off the ground — which means the entire mass has to be carried on two hind legs and a tail down into a tall stone plinth. That is a cantilever in an unforgiving material with no second attempt once it is cast. Krippel produced several Atatürk monuments around the country in those years. And note the orientation, because it is not accidental: this one faces the sea, towards the point where the ship came in. Structure is half the job. Siting is the other half, and the siting here is exact.
<p>Listen up. This is a multifilament, and multifilament means bundled fibres behaving like a rope instead of a rod. Composition is one hundred per cent polyamide throughout — filaments, matrix and sheath, no cheap core wrapped in a story. Gauge is 15L, which is 1.35 millimetres, and that is the thickest string in the Xplore line. Set length is 40 feet, 12.2 metres. Colour blue.
Made in France, on a solvent-free process. Those are the facts and there is no negotiating with them.</p>
<p>Now what it does. Thick multifilament is the durability end of the comfort family.
You get the buttery feel and the easy power that put multis in the frame in the first place, and because 1.35 is a fat string you also get more control and more life out of it than the thinner gauges will ever give you. Translation for the ranks: if you are a string-breaker who cannot tolerate polyester, this is your string.
If your elbow has started sending complaints up the chain of command, this is also your string. It works as a full bed or as one half of a hybrid when you want to soften a poly job. No stragglers on this one — it is the most forgiving thing in the case.</p>
<p>Samsun is where we are drilling today, and Samsun understands arriving with a purpose.
On the nineteenth of May 1919 Mustafa Kemal came ashore here off the steamer Bandırma and the Turkish War of Independence started from this quay. That is a city that knows what a beginning looks like. You will get use out of this string everywhere from a windy public court above the Black Sea to an indoor hall in the dead of an Anatolian winter.
And by the way — it is perfect for anyone who eats a Samsun pide before playing, because the local flatbread comes out of the oven the length of your forearm and you will be needing the comfort in your string bed to make up for the lack of it anywhere else.</p>
<p>One order, and I want it followed: string it and play it. Multifilament loses tension faster than poly.
It does not improve in the bag. Move.</p>
