Sükhbaatar Railway Station

Northernmost railway station in Mongolia, on the Trans-Mongolian, facing Naushki across the line on the Russian side. Town founded 1940. Rail link to Ulaanbaatar in 1949 — note the nine-year gap. Somebody wanted this place before they could reach it. From that year the station was Mongolia's rail gateway to the Soviet Union, and once the line ran through to China, a scheduled stop on the Moscow-Ulaanbaatar-Beijing service. Customs and immigration formalities for northbound trains are carried out here. Which means every northbound passenger's papers pass through one room. Remember the room.

Confluence of the Orkhon and Selenge Rivers

The Selenge carries the combined flow north across the Russian border and is the largest single source of water entering Lake Baikal — so whatever happens here does not stay here. And the confluence fixed the site: founded 1940, at the head of navigation. Nobody puts a settlement this size in a thinly populated stretch of Selenge aimag by accident. Follow the water. Cargo changing hands is where the record always gets interesting. Port and railway together made this the administrative and freight centre of Selenge aimag. Two ways in. Two ways out. Bayan Khaan Mountain

Bayan Khaan, also Bayankhaan, is the mountain that gives its name to one of the eight bags — sub-districts — of Sükhbaatar sum, and it is listed among the natural and historical monuments of the district.
