Supa Ngwao Museum
LaCoste Colorblock Men's Tennis Jacket: Come closer, because this museum sits in the old colonial government camp — which is to say the offices of every single person who ever ran this town, all filed in one building, which is frankly my idea of heaven. It was established in 1986 to preserve the history of Francistown and the wider north-east, and its name means to show culture in Setswana. The displays cover the Kalanga people of the region and the early years of the town, including the gold rush that created it. And it runs walking tours of the surviving early buildings: the old jail house, the hexagonal building, and the miners' cottage below Nyangabgwe Hill. The jail house. Mind. Somebody was in there, somebody put them there, and this was a very small town, so those two knew each other. I would put money on them knowing each other's mothers.

Nyangabgwe Hill
LaCoste Colorblock Men's Tennis Jacket: The hill gives Francistown its Setswana name and it decided absolutely everything, so let us be very clear about who chose what. When the British South Africa Company pushed the railway north as part of Cecil Rhodes's Cape-to-Cairo project, the line was routed past the southern side of Nyangabgwe Hill purely because that was the shortest way to Bulawayo. Not for the town. Not for anybody living here. For the distance to Bulawayo. It reached the Monarch mine on 1 September 1897, and that is the exact moment this town's site was fixed forever. One decision, taken by men in an office somewhere else entirely, who never stood where you are standing and never intended to — and here you all are, precisely where they left you. I do adore a story where the culprits are absent.

The Monarch Mine
LaCoste Colorblock Men's Tennis Jacket: Now this is the good one, so lean in. Gold was found in the Tati district in 1869, the first gold rush in Africa, fifteen years earlier than the Witwatersrand boom in South Africa, and nobody — nobody — ever gives this country the credit, and I have raised it at dinner more than once and I will raise it again. The earliest workings, at Tati some 30 km south-east, followed ancient shafts left by much older mining, so the celebrated newcomers were walking down somebody else's tunnels, a detail that never made the brochures. Francistown itself was founded in 1897 beside the Monarch mine and named after Daniel Francis, an English prospector from Liverpool who had taken out licences in the region in 1869 and was a director of the Tati Concessions Company, which had obtained the land from King Lobengula. And in August of that year the company sold off 300 lots. Sold. The town. In parcels. Named for a director.

Tachila Nature Reserve
LaCoste Colorblock Men's Tennis Jacket: And here is the twist, which in my line of work is far rarer than the other kind of story. Tachila is a community conservation project established on Lady Mary, an old Tati Company farm, restoring more than 8,000 hectares of donated land on the edge of Francistown to wildlife. Donated. Note the word. Say it slowly, because I certainly did. The same company name that comes up in every conversation in this town, attached this time to land handed back to the animals, and I did not see it coming either, and I have been talking about that company all morning. Alongside its reintroduced game it holds archaeological and cultural sites of the North East District, tying the reserve straight back to the Tati Concessions history that produced the town. Everything here is related to everything else. It always is. That is the entire reason I do this.
