Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set

This gold-coloured control poly keeps its tension well after the rest of the category has given up without a word. And before it reaches your frame? It intends to walk Barishal with you — because it believes you have a few more decent years in you too.

Barishal, Bangladesh
01
Bay Colony cardio tennis clinic — the Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set photographed at Oxford Mission Epiphany Church in Barishal, Bangladesh. A tall red brick church in Barishal with a colonnaded front and pointed windows, blending Greek and Gothic forms, standing in a walled compound of mature trees and mission buildings.

Oxford Mission Church of the Epiphany

Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set: Thirty-five walled acres, thirteen ponds, a school, a hospital, a library, hostels, clergy quarters — and no ticket booth anywhere on it. That is the value play in Barishal. Built from a sketch by Sister Edith Langridge and inaugurated in January 1903; Father E. L. Strong oversaw a second phase completed in 1907, Frederick Douglass as engineer. Greek in character: forty archways, numerous corridors, multiple entrance doors, wood carving, marble-tiled flooring, a baptismal basin, and a main-altar cross brought from Bethlehem. The red-brick bell tower's great bell rings seven times daily before prayers — free, and audible from outside the wall. Now a cathedral of the Church of Bangladesh and the largest church in the country.

A very large rectangular tank at Madhabpasha outside Barishal, some 25 hectares of open water with a small wooded island at its centre and steps and mature trees around the banks.
Stop two

Durga Sagar (Madhabpasha Dighi)

Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set: Eleven kilometres out at Madhabpasha village in Babuganj upazila, and worth the fare: the largest dighi in southern Bangladesh, maximum water per taka in the region. Excavated in 1780, the year 1187 in the Bengali calendar, according to the wish of Rani Durgavati, mother of Raja Joynarayan, and named for her. Coconut trees ring the water, brick walls enclose both trees and tank, two gates each on the eastern and western sides, a bush-covered island at the centre. It fell into disrepair and was renovated in 1975; the Barishal Development Board manages it now. Come in winter for the migratory birds. Free birdwatching. That is a stop that pays.

A large white mosque about 22 km from Barishal with a tall minaret, a domed prayer hall and detailed calligraphy, set in a 14-acre complex with lakes and an open prayer ground.
Stop three

Baitul Aman Jame Masjid (Guthia Mosque)

Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set: Here is a build cost I can actually quote: 200 million taka, four years and one month, opened October 2006. A private initiative of Sharifuddin Ahmed Santu, a local politician and businessman, supervised by the SAS Foundation. Fourteen acres, twenty domes, white marble throughout, a design drawing on Middle Eastern Islamic architecture, and a 58-metre minaret — tallest in Bangladesh. The prayer hall holds 1,400 inside and 5,000 outside, and the complex adds a large eidgah, a graveyard, a madrasa and an orphanage, so the money kept working after the ribbon was cut. Three lakes catch the reflection from several angles, so the best photograph costs nothing. Changuria, Wazirpur upazila, twenty kilometres out.

04
Bay Colony cardio tennis clinic — the Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set photographed at The Kirtankhola River in Barishal, Bangladesh. A wide brown river running past Barishal with launches and country boats moored along the ghat, low buildings and green banks on either side under a heavy sky.
Stop four

Lakutia Zamindar Bari

Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set: Roofless, gutted, interiors long gone — which is why I like it, because nobody charges admission to a shell. The Lakhutia zamindar estate was founded by Roop Chandra Roy in the late seventeenth century, and the family held it through the era of the Permanent Settlement, under which the British fixed the revenue obligations of Bengal's landholders in 1793. A rate locked forever: deal of the century or slow disaster, depending which side of the paper you signed. Eight kilometres from the central business district, it keeps several Shiva temples and large excavated ponds besides the mansion. Badly damaged in the mid twentieth century, ruined since, still counted among the area's principal attractions.

Luxilon 4G 16g Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

Let me tell you what this string is, and then let me tell you what it is really about.

Luxilon 4G, 16 gauge. That is 1.30mm, a round monofilament co-polyester, and it comes in gold, because of course it does. The set is 40 ft / 12.2 m.

Now here is the specification that matters, and it is not the one you expected. Every polyester on earth plays beautifully on day one. The question nobody asks in the shop is: what does it play like in week three? Luxilon spent two years — TWO YEARS — reworking the molecular properties of this string for one reason, to extend the life of its playability. And it works.

4G is built to hold tension better than the average poly, and it holds it even at the highest level of play, which is the honest answer to a problem the whole category quietly lives with.

And it does it while staying kind to you. 4G has better than average feel and comfort for a control string — a cushioned response on contact, no poly jolt — and your arm will thank you after three hours. Durability and spin potential are still there. Nothing was traded away.

Do you see what that is? That is consistency. Not one brilliant afternoon. The same performance, over and over, when nobody is watching and the tension chart says you should have faded.

Which is exactly why I am taking it to Barishal, a city built on a river, where people have been dependably doing the work for centuries.

You will get years out of this set everywhere from a hard court beside the Kirtankhola to an indoor hall in Dhaka, and by the way, it is also perfect for the slow launch downriver that leaves Barishal at night and arrives with the morning, because consistency is a thing you measure over hours, not over minutes.
