Catedral de Tulcán

The cathedral was built around 1900 and rebuilt in 1924, the rebuild forced by the 1923 earthquake that badly damaged Tulcán. After the 1923 earthquake wrecked much of Tulcán, the inhabitants concluded the city should be rebuilt on the flat, safer ground of the Ejido Norte. On 22 December 1926 President Isidro Ayora committed the national government to it, and on 14 January 1927 the provisional president granted Tulcán 150,000 sucres to buy the land. The park at the heart of the new quarter was designed by the architect Gato Sobral and named for Ayora. Construction ran roughly twenty-five years. Twenty-five. The sundial, at least, still has its original design.
