Stop one

The ruins of Chandwar (Chandrawar) fort

This is Chandwar, the older town on this site and the political centre of the district before the name Firozabad was given in 1566 under Akbar. The history is heavy: in 1194 the Battle of Chandawar was fought here between Muhammad of Ghor and Jayachandra, the Gahadavala king of Kannauj. Jayachandra was killed, and the defeat opened northern India to Ghurid conquest, two years after Prithviraj Chauhan's defeat at Tarain. The fort still overlooks the Yamuna, with ruined temples, mosques and tombs around it. Nobody climbs on any of it for a photo.

Stop two

Kotla Fort, Firozabad district

Kotla Fort is one of the district's principal recorded monuments, standing in the Hirangaon area, and its ditch was described in survey records of 1884 — that surveyor is basically the original documentation account, and his notes are the only reason we know the scale of the defences before they decayed. It belongs to the belt of fortified sites along the Yamuna that controlled the Agra to Kannauj road in the medieval period. Low angle from the ditch line, wide, let the earthwork do the talking.

The Jain temple at Chandwar (Marsalganj)

Chandwar was a significant Jain centre — the Chauhan Rajputs of the area embraced Jainism, and a number of Jain texts were composed here. The temple is traditionally held to have been founded in 1052 by King Chandrasen, with rebuilding and extension in later centuries. A further Jain temple in the town, founded by Seth Chhami Dami Lal Jain, is noted for the sculpture in its hall. This is a working pilgrimage destination for the Jain community, so we film nothing inside and we film nobody praying. That part is not negotiable.

Stop four

Shri Hanuman Temple, Firozabad

The Shri Hanuman Temple was established as a monastery in the Maratha period, founded under Baji Rao Peshwa II, which places it in the years of Maratha power in the Doab before British annexation. It is one of the town's main functioning temples and appears in the district's official list of monuments. And then the context you cannot post Firozabad without: this town grew into the centre of India's glass-bangle industry, and those furnaces have shaped it since the colonial period. Get bangles in the frame. Always bangles.
