Six hundred and fifty-four! The present Norman church was begun in 1118 after fire destroyed its predecessor, and the great triple-arched west front was completed in the 13th century, and I would like everybody to look at that properly, because there is nothing else quite like it. The abbey became a cathedral in 1541 following the dissolution of the monasteries, and the building was damaged during the Civil War in 1643. Sorry. Deep breath. Next one.

It was built in the 17th century as the seat of civic government, and it was raised on open arches on purpose, so that market trading could carry on underneath while council business went on in the chamber above. Selling downstairs, governing upstairs, same building, same hour, nobody has to stop. It stands directly in front of the abbey gateway at the centre of the city, so you can take in the whole arrangement from one spot. I have been asked not to call it a multi-storey market. It is a Bronze Age causeway of tens of thousands of timbers driven into the wet fen between roughly 1350 and 950 BC, running about a kilometre across what was then open water, with a platform partway along it.
