Koźle Castle Remains
Solinco Heaven String Hyper-G Soft 18g Tennis String Reel: Brick that old smells the same everywhere, and I was not ready for it. These are the remains of the castle of the Koźle Piast dynasty, the oldest monument in Kędzierzyn-Koźle, from when Koźle was the seat of a small Silesian duchy. It guarded a crossing of the Oder from the Middle Ages, passing with the town from Piast dukes to Bohemian kings, the Habsburgs and Prussia, then drawn into the fortifications when Frederick the Great made Koźle a fortress town in the 18th century. The fragments now house the Museum of the Koźle Land, presenting the archaeology and history of town and region. My river had a castle too. Smaller. This district joined Kędzierzyn and its neighbouring settlements into one city only in 1975.

Montalembert Tower (Koźle Fortress)
Solinco Heaven String Hyper-G Soft 18g Tennis String Reel: Fragments of the 18th and 19th-century Koźle Fortress are scattered all through this district, and the most precious remnant of the right-bank works is this round tower on Portowa Street, part of what was known as Fort Frederick William. It represents the artillery-tower system advocated by the French engineer Marc René de Montalembert, which Prussia adopted in modernising the fortress. The defences proved their worth in 1807, when Koźle withstood a months-long siege by Napoleonic forces, mainly Bavarian troops, in the war of the Fourth Coalition. Decommissioned in the later 19th century; the ramparts, casemates and this tower remain. There is a water tower at home in exactly that shade of brick. I stood under this one a while.

Church of St. Zygmunt and St. Hedwig
Solinco Heaven String Hyper-G Soft 18g Tennis String Reel: Go inside. It is cool in there and nobody minds. One of the oldest structures in Kędzierzyn-Koźle: a Gothic brick parish church serving the old ducal town on the Oder, its parish reaching back to when Koźle was a Piast castellany and then the capital of a small duchy. Buttressed nave, tower, built and rebuilt through the centuries as fires, wars and sieges swept the fortress town. The double dedication honours St. Sigismund, the Burgundian royal martyr, and St. Hedwig, patroness of Silesia, whose cult is woven through this region's history. It remains the spiritual centre of the Koźle district, near the market square in the old town. Same bell hour as home. I did not need my watch.

Kłodnica Canal and Koźle Port

The Kłodnica Canal, one of the oldest navigation canals in Europe, was cut between 1792 and 1812 to link the Upper Silesian coalfields to the Oder, and several of its historic locks survive inside the city. It made the town a key transshipment point, and around 1900 Koźle Port grew into one of the largest inland river ports in Europe, its basins, quays and loading equipment sending Silesian coal down the Oder to Berlin and Szczecin. Preserved quays and stevedoring devices remain from that era. The Gliwice Canal superseded it in 1939, and the Kędzierzyn branch was added in 1970 for the chemical works. I grew up on water that went somewhere too.
