Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 18g Tennis String Reel

This 1.15 mm string, my sweetest cut, wraps a spool so generous my stall never goes dry. But first, my friend, you walk with me: Fort Jesus, the old mosque, the dhow harbour, the tusks over the road. Then we discuss price. For you? Special price.

Mombasa, Kenya
01
cardio tennis camp — Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Large coral-stone Portuguese fortress with angled bastions overlooking the entrance to Mombasa's Old Port
Stop one

Fort Jesus

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 18g Tennis String Reel: Built by the Portuguese from 1593 — from, not in, and the distinction is not pedantry, it is the difference between a date and a duration. Coral stone, angled bastions, laid out by an Italian engineer to the plan of a man lying down, above the entrance to the Old Port. Now the siege, and I want to be exact about this because people round it off. Omani forces surrounded the fort from 1696 and it held out for nearly three years. Nearly. Not three. Nearly three, and the difference is months of plague inside these walls with no relief coming, and when it finally fell there was almost nobody left alive inside to take prisoner. I will not shorten that sentence to make it tidier.

02
cardio tennis camp — Mandhry Mosque in Mombasa, Small white mosque with a slender cylindrical minaret on a narrow lane in Mombasa's Old Town
Stop two

Mandhry Mosque

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 18g Tennis String Reel: Sixteenth century — and no, I am not narrowing that further than the evidence permits, however much it costs me to leave a whole century sitting there unsliced. What I can state precisely is this: it has never stopped being in use, which is rarer than the phrase makes it sound. Small, white, with a slender cylindrical minaret you cannot even see from the narrow lane in the Old Town until you are standing directly beneath it. Four hundred years of the same hour observed in the same building, through the Portuguese, the Omani and the British. Four hundred and some. There. I said 'and some', and I would like it noted that saying it cost me something.

03
cardio tennis camp — Old Port and dhow harbour in Mombasa, Sheltered inlet below Fort Jesus in Mombasa Old Town, where wooden dhows moor along a stone quay
Stop three

Old Port and dhow harbour

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 18g Tennis String Reel: The monsoon ran the schedule, and the schedule was not approximate. The northeast wind brought dhows down from Arabia and India from around November; the southwest wind carried them home from April. Around November — I dislike 'around' intensely, but the wind does not consult a calendar, so 'around' is the honest word and I will therefore use it. That is months ashore, every single year, without exception. Which is precisely why this town looks the way it does: the trade did not pass through, it wintered here, married here, stayed. Wooden hulls still moor along that stone quay in the sheltered inlet below Fort Jesus, and they still knock against the stone.

04
cardio tennis camp — Mombasa Tusks (Pembe za Ndovu) in Mombasa, Four giant white aluminium arches shaped like crossed elephant tusks spanning Moi Avenue in central Mombasa
Stop four

Mombasa Tusks (Pembe za Ndovu)

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 18g Tennis String Reel: Four giant arches, crossed like tusks, spanning Moi Avenue — aluminium, not ivory, and I correct that several times a day and will go on correcting it. Put up in 1952 for a royal visit by the then Princess Elizabeth. Then: she was in Kenya when her father died, and she left the country as queen. Both halves of that sentence are exact and I have checked them more times than is reasonable. So these arches were raised to welcome a princess, and were standing right here on the night the title changed. Everyone photographs them at noon, when the light comes straight down and flattens the curve out entirely. It is the wrong hour. It is objectively the wrong hour.

Written for this world alone.

Karibu, karibu, my friend! Fresh-fresh, best on the street, come see! You want sweet? I have sweet. You want STRING? Ahh — today is your lucky day, because I also have the best string on the coast: the Solinco Hyper-G Round 18g reel! Look at this green — same famous Hyper-G green everybody knows, like the top of my youngest coconuts. But feel it — smooth!

Round profile, no square edges, and that smoothness gives you fast-fast snapback and a flat, driving ball that goes THROUGH the court like a matatu through traffic. No stopping!

And the size, my friend, the size! This is the reel — 656 feet, 200 meters, sixteen-plus stringings — wholesale, like I buy my coconuts! Gauge 18, 1.15 millimeters, the thinnest of the family: maximum feel, quick response, sweet like madafu water. Medium-firm co-polyester, low power, all control — and the tension holds and holds, week after week, no going soft in the heat.

In Mombasa heat! I tested! Okay, my cousin tested. Same thing.

My stall is in Mombasa, Kenya, the old Swahili port where the monsoon winds brought dhows from Arabia and India for a thousand years — trade is in the air here, which is why my prices are excellent and my stories are free. You will use this string everywhere from morning tennis near the old town to evening games when the sea breeze comes.

It is also perfect for the humid Mombasa afternoons when the ball goes heavy and everybody else slows down. And after, you drink one of my coconuts. Best price. For you? Special price.
