Solinco Heaven Strings Tour Bite 17g Tennis String Set: Around 1878 a Māori contingent including Te Aweawe gathered to choose a Māori name for this square and settled on Te Marae o Hine, the courtyard of the daughter of peace. Naming your central square after peace is a wager on the future, and I have a soft spot for anyone who takes the long odds. Near the middle stands the Hopwood Clock Tower, donated by Arthur Hopwood and built in the 1950s at 26.5 metres; refurbishment in 2007 added the cross and brought it to 30.5. Four metres up, half a century later. Nobody ever went broke backing a clock.

Solinco Heaven Strings Tour Bite 17g Tennis String Set: 1930. Charles Hollinshed of Melbourne designs it for J. C. Williamson Ltd on the site of the old Post Office Hotel, and here is the bet: they equip it both for live shows and for the talkies, which had reached New Zealand only two years earlier. Two years. That is staking money on a technology with the ink still wet, while hedging on the stage. Hedged bets look timid right up until the results come in, and this is one of the few survivors of the Williamson chain of theatres. The house that split its stake is the house still open.

Solinco Heaven Strings Tour Bite 17g Tennis String Set: In 1887 the newly formed borough was granted 361 acres between Park Road and the Manawatū River, and in 1891 the Palmerston North Reserves Act divided it and set aside about 39 acres of riverbank as an esplanade. Read that back: they let most of the land go and held on to a strip of the river. Everybody folds a good hand eventually. But that 39 acres opened in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the Dugald MacKenzie Rose Garden on it now holds more than 5,000 rose bushes. Small stake. Very long payout.

The Manawatū cuts straight across a mountain chain instead of going around it, separating the Ruahine Range to the north from the Tararua Range to the south and carrying itself through the middle. Water against rock over geological time: the rock was favourite, and the water collected. Its Māori name, Te Āpiti, means the narrow passage. Walking tracks along it run from about half an hour to four hours, which is your call, and the four-hour is the value play. Do not ask how I know.
