Wang Church (Vang Stave Church)

Twelfth-century wooden stave church, from the village of Vang in Norway. It was due for demolition until Friedrich Wilhelm IV had it bought in 1841, taken apart, and shipped through Szczecin and Berlin up to Brueckenberg, now Karpacz Gorny. Put back together between 1842 and 1844 at about 885 metres, pegs and joinery, not one nail. Stone bell tower added against the mountain wind. Dragons, lions and vines on the portals. Marek does a whole thing here.

Solinco Heaven Strings Tour Bite 19g Tennis String Set: I'm only covering this because it was on Marek's list, and he explains it better. 1910 to 1915. It went up after the flood of July 1897 tore through the settlements along these mountain rivers and the Prussian province of Silesia answered with a flood-control programme for the whole province. Granite, quarried locally. It was never built to store water for supply – it is there to catch the surge coming off the mountain, hold the debris, take the force out of the river. Still doing it, a century on. The stepped spillway is the photograph everyone takes. That's it, really.

Museum of Sport and Tourism in Karpacz

Opened 1974, a branch of the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Gora, in a building done in the regional alpine style, and it exists to record how mountain tourism and skiing here actually happened. Early wooden skis. Sleds. Bobsleigh and luge kit from the old toboggan runs. Mountaineering and rescue gear. Prints, maps and photographs of the weavers' and herders' villages under Sniezka turning into resort towns from the nineteenth century on. Also the laboranci, the herbalist healers, and Rubezahl the mountain spirit, Liczyrzepa in Polish. I like the laboranci. Sorry. Moving on.

Solinco Heaven Strings Tour Bite 19g Tennis String Set: Last one, then Marek is back tomorrow and you get the good version. Sniezka: 1,603 metres, the highest peak of the Karkonosze and of the whole Sudetes, straight above us on the Polish-Czech border. People have been climbing that bare stone for centuries. The Schaffgotsch family put the Baroque Chapel of St Lawrence on the summit between 1665 and 1681. A weather observatory has run up there since the late nineteenth century – the three linked saucers you can see were finished in 1974, one of Poland's most distinctive modernist buildings. Karpacz is the Polish base: up the Lomnica valley, past the glacial cirques of the national park. Was that alright?
