Solinco Mach-10 18g Tennis String Set: Push through the trees of the central park — the trees, mind, not a street — and there it stands, whitewashed, low-domed, its bell tower keeping its own counsel. Built in 1837, in the decades after Russia annexed Bessarabia in 1812, and protected now as a state monument. This place was Scheia when first recorded in 1502, Frumoasa by 1716, and took the name Cahul from the battle fought nearby in 1770. Russian, Romanian, Soviet — the town changed hands repeatedly. This building did not move.

Muzeul Ținutului Cahul (Cahul Regional Museum)
Solinco Mach-10 18g Tennis String Set: A plain two-storey house standing straight on the street, no forecourt, no warning — and inside, forty thousand objects. Forty thousand. The largest museum in southern Moldova, founded on 30 July 1958, with three departments: history, natural sciences, ethnography. Roman and early medieval archaeology from the lower Prut, Bessarabian peasant textiles and tools, and the natural history of the Beleu lake wetlands downstream. One expects a cabinet and finds an entire region. I shall need a larger notebook.

Universitatea de Stat "Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu" din Cahul
Solinco Mach-10 18g Tennis String Set: A modern block, a paved forecourt, and an expedition of some two thousand students crossing it twice a day. Cahul State University opened in 1999, named for Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, 1838 to 1907, the Bessarabian-born philologist, historian and folklorist, and it began with three faculties. The intent was deliberate: after independence the south was to have its own higher learning rather than send everybody north to Chișinău. It is the largest such institution between the capital and the Danube. Discovery, you see, is sometimes a policy.

Sanatoriul "Nufărul Alb"
Solinco Mach-10 18g Tennis String Set: Down an avenue of trees, deep in the parkland, a great balconied block — and beneath it the real find: springs unusually rich in bromine and iodine. Nufărul Alb was built to exploit them, hospital and hotel at once in the Soviet resort manner, and it remains one of Moldova's principal spas. The name means white water lily, which is also the name of the folk music festival held here every second July, tying the place to the Prut floodplain wetlands a few kilometres west. I claim none of it. I merely arrived.
Mach-10 is Solinco's shaped co-polyester for players who want a poly's control without a poly's punishment. The profile is a five-sided monofilament — five sharp edges to bite the ball, wrapped in a low-friction surface so the mains slide out of line under load and snap back into place afterwards instead of staying where the last swing left them.
Underneath the shape sits CloudFORM, Solinco's chemical formulation that softens the string without the usual trade-off in playability duration. That is the reason testers keep reporting the same thing: Mach-10 feels noticeably softer than the polyester next to it in the bag. Not multifilament soft. Soft for a poly, which is a real and useful distinction.
