Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set

This is the 1.25 mm version of a 985-filament multifilament with a monofilament core — soft, deeply pocketing, kind to an elbow. It has been to Doboj before, several times, in several centuries, and in those days it had far better seats. It would rather show you round than talk about itself.

Doboj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hard midday summer sun on hewn ashlar walls a metre thick during the medieval festival: re-enactors in mail crossing the inner ward mid-stride, a smith's fire smoking, children queueing at the archery butts, banners snapping on the northern tower, the Bosna valley bleached white beyond the parapet. The string set rests in a sunlit embrasure of the wall.

Doboj Fortress (Gradina)

Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set: Begun in the early thirteenth century (on the site of an earlier timber-and-earth motte, ninth or tenth century — the sources hedge, and so, reluctantly, do I), enlarged in the early fifteenth, and in 1415 the setting of a major battle between Hungarian, Bosnian and Ottoman forces. The Ottomans extended it again around 1490. Now, the number I actually came for: eighteen attacks during the Austro-Ottoman wars. Eighteen. Not 'roughly twenty'. It fell to Austria-Hungary in 1878, which, if one is counting, is the last of them, and one is counting. Among the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country.

Low misty early morning at ground level: the excavated hypocaust pillars of the bathhouse standing in wet grass, two archaeologists kneeling with trowels and a bucket while a third sets a level rod, river mist lying flat over the confluence behind, dew and long shadows. The string set sits on the corner of a cut stone block at the edge of the trench.

The confluence of the Bosna and Usora rivers

Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set: Doboj exists because two rivers meet at this exact spot, and I want to be precise about why that matters. The Bosna valley is the principal natural corridor through central Bosnia; hold the confluence and you hold movement along the whole of it (hence the fortress, sited exactly where the fortress is — not sentiment, gradient). The Bosna, incidentally, is where the country's name comes from. The town sits ringed by four mountains — Ozren, Trebava, Vučjak and Krnjin — and the Romans, who were not sentimental either, ran the identical calculation and built their camp at the meeting of the two rivers in the first century AD.

Rainy evening, close in on the church steps under the lit doorway: worshippers arriving with umbrellas folding, candle glow spilling from the porch onto wet stone, a woman covering her head at the threshold, the tower and cross dark against a bruised sky, reflections of the candlelight in the puddles. The string set sits on the stone balustrade beside the steps.
Stop three

The Roman castrum at Makljenovac

Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set: First century AD, Flavian period, under Vespasian — I could give you the reign dates, but you would stop me, and fairly. Standard rectangular plan, towers at all four corners. Excavation has turned up a bathhouse with hypocaust underfloor heating (hot air circulating beneath a raised floor; genuinely superb; we mislaid the technique for centuries afterwards), an altar to Jupiter, figurines of Mars, and imported African terra sigillata — the glossy red tableware, which travels, which tells you this garrison was plugged into the wider empire. A civilian canabae grew alongside, and a villa rustica has surfaced in what is now the Vila suburb.

Blue hour, wide across the marshalling yard: dozens of sidings glinting under floodlight masts, a shunter easing a rake of wagons, a shunting crew walking the ballast with lamps, signal gantries and a lit signal box, the fortress hill a black silhouette above the yard. The string set rests on a cable duct cover in the foreground.

Doboj railway station

Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set: The largest railway junction in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and, separately, the operational base of the country's railway corporation (people merge those two facts; I decline to). Lines north to the Sava, south up the Bosna valley, east toward Tuzla — three, converging here, which made the town an industrial and logistical centre wildly out of proportion to its size. The railway arrived under Austro-Hungarian administration after 1878, initially on narrow gauge (cheaper, tighter curves, invariably regretted later), and the yards have been Doboj's largest employer through every political change since. Every one of them.

The Doboj, Bosnia and Herzegovina track

Tecnifibre Multifeel 17g Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

Multifeel is one idea executed properly. Nine hundred and eighty-five composite multifilaments make up 60% of the string's volume and are wrapped around a single central monofilament worth another 20%, and the whole bundle is immersed in polyurethane for the last 20%. The filaments give you the comfort.

The core is what stops a multifilament dying the way multifilaments usually die — soft, furry and finished by the third week.

Specifics. 17 gauge, 1.25 mm, round conventional profile with no shaping, in Natural and in Black. The set is 12 m / 40 ft, one racquet. The 1.25 gives you more feel and more spin potential than the 16 and less durability, which is the trade every thinner gauge asks you to make.

Over it goes Tecnifibre's Lubritec anti-abrasion treatment, Silicone Pyrogene, which is why the sawing action at the crosses does not chew the bed apart.

What players report is high comfort, deep pocketing and a soft, dampened response — an arm-friendly bed, and the string you reach for when a stiff frame needs calming down.

Doboj is a town that has been arguing with hard things for eight hundred years: an ashlar fortress up on the hill with walls a metre thick, and, a little downstream at Makljenovac, a Roman military camp from the first century whose bathhouse had underfloor heating.

You'll use this everywhere from a club court by the Bosna to an indoor hall in Sarajevo, and by the way, it suits a town that takes its coffee in small cups very slowly indeed — a dampened stringbed is the right kit for people who refuse to be hurried.
