Havana, Cuba
01
cardio tennis clinics Fort Lauderdale Beach — Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro in Havana, Stone fortress with a lighthouse on the rocky headland at the eastern entrance to Havana harbour, facing the old city across the channel
Stop one

Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro

Tecnifibre Razor Soft 16g Tennis String Set: One is obliged to begin with the embarrassment. A French corsair took the entire town in 1555 — took it, my dears, the way one takes a chair — and Spain, mortified, engaged an Italian military engineer and began this from about 1589. Enormous, and quite unassailable from the sea, with the lighthouse still minding the channel at the harbour mouth. Then in 1762 the British landed up the coast and came at it from behind, over land, and took Havana. The fortress was facing the wrong way. Two centuries of stonework undone by a party arriving at the tradesman's entrance. One is not surprised. One is merely tired.

02
cardio tennis clinics Fort Lauderdale Beach — El Capitolio in Havana, Domed neoclassical capitol building on Paseo del Prado in central Havana, with a long colonnaded portico and a tall stone dome
Stop two

El Capitolio

Tecnifibre Razor Soft 16g Tennis String Set: Finished in 1929, which is to say practically wet paint, and beneath that dome, set into the floor, they put a diamond of twenty-four carats marking kilometre zero — the point from which every road distance in Cuba is measured. A nation measuring itself outward from a jewel. That one approves of entirely. Then in 1946 the stone was stolen, the police turned the city over, and some months later it simply reappeared upon the president's desk. No explanation was ever offered, and one does not enquire. What lies in the floor today is a replica, which is what becomes of everything eventually, including families.

03
cardio tennis clinics Fort Lauderdale Beach — Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana, Twin-towered 1930 hotel on a bluff above the Malecón in Vedado, Havana, with formal gardens running down toward the sea
Stop three

Hotel Nacional de Cuba

Tecnifibre Razor Soft 16g Tennis String Set: Twin towers, 1930, formal gardens running down toward the sea from the bluff above the Malecón — the last address in this hemisphere at which one might arrive correctly dressed. In 1933, during a political upheaval, hundreds of army officers barricaded themselves inside and the building was shelled. Artillery. At a hotel. And then in December 1946 it hosted a notorious gathering of American organised crime figures, held under cover of a Frank Sinatra engagement so that the guest list should resemble a concert audience. Fourteen years: siege, then gangsters, then a crooner deployed as a fig leaf. One cannot decide which development to deplore first.

04
cardio tennis clinics Fort Lauderdale Beach — The Malecón in Havana, Broad seawall esplanade curving several kilometres along Havana's northern shore, with waves breaking over the wall onto the roadway
Stop four

The Malecón

Tecnifibre Razor Soft 16g Tennis String Set: It is a wall. One says that without shame, since it is a wall the sea attacks. Construction began in 1901, during the United States occupation that followed the Spanish-American War, and it was extended by degrees over the next fifty-odd years, the Atlantic objecting continuously to the work and having to be negotiated with rather than instructed. In winter the waves come clean over the top and close the road entirely. And several kilometres of it curve along the northern shore, and the whole city sits on it of an evening as though it were a drawing room. Soaked through. One's people would have called that a shocking way to take the air. One's people were also wrong about very nearly everything.

The Havana, Cuba track

Written for this world alone.

¡Dale! Everybody in, circle up — new partner today, and this one has RHYTHM. Tecnifibre Razor Soft 16, come to the middle, don't be shy. Now watch the footwork, people: this is a co-polyester from the Razor control family — and control, mis amigos, is just choreography under pressure. On-ONE: the string takes the ball.

On-TWO-THREE: it holds it, soft formulation, that gentle connection — this is the Razor line's smooth partner, easier on the arm than a stiff poly, more feel in the frame, but it NEVER loses the beat. On-FIVE-SIX-SEVEN: release, precise, exactly where you led it. Low power, high control, dependable spin — the 16 gauge at 1.30 millimeters is sturdy enough to dance all season.

One 40-foot set dresses one racquet. And remember rule one of my studio: it's not about force. It's about CONNECTION. ¡Otra vez!

And where do we dance? HAVANA, of course — where else would rhythm live? This city moves even when it's standing still: the Malecón, begun in 1901, is eight kilometers of seawall where the whole town promenades while the Atlantic throws waves clean over the top — the boldest dance partner in the Caribbean, and it NEVER misses a beat either.

You'll use this string everywhere from a morning hit near the old fortress to a night session when the music spills out of every doorway, and by the way, hydration in this studio means a cold guarapo — fresh cane juice — or you're doing Havana wrong. Now, the cool-down: a walking tour, four stops, and YES we keep time the whole way. Five-six-seven-eight!
