Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set

This is one set of the reference comfort multifilament, drawn to 1.24 mm — a generous pocket, a heavy ball, almost no shock at the elbow. Your star chart is not the problem; your tension is. Purnia will be read to you first, beginning at the temple the city is named after.

Purnia, India
01
cardio tennis clinics in 33306 — Puran Devi Mandir in Purnia, A temple compound on the western edge of the built-up city, about five kilometres from the centre: a whitewashed and painted shrine with a stepped tower over the sanctum, red and yellow flags on bamboo poles, and a wide open forecourt of hard-packed earth used by queues of pilgrims. Stalls selling flowers, coconuts and red cloth line the approach lane

Puran Devi Mandir

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set: Okay so — I have not slept, it is fine, this is fine. This is the oldest temple in Purnia, dedicated to the goddess Puran Devi, a form of Kali, and here is the actual thing, the thing I have been chewing on since about four this morning: the city is generally held to take its NAME from the temple. Not the other way round. The temple named the city. The shrine is documented from the Mughal period and is counted locally among the Siddha Pithas, and it remains the principal pilgrimage site of the whole district, with its biggest crowds at Durga Puja and Kali Puja. Where was I. Right. The name. It is the name.

02
cardio tennis clinics in 33306 — City Kali Bari in Purnia, A Kali temple standing on the bank of the Saura river in the older part of the city, in the Bengali style: a squat shrine with a curved roofline and a small tower, painted white and red, with a covered pillared hall in front of it, a courtyard and a bell hung at the entrance. The river runs low and slow immediately behind, with houses crowding to the water's edge
Stop two

City Kali Bari

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set: Follow me, and — no, sorry, this way. The City Kali Bari was established by the Bengali community that settled in Purnia during the colonial period, when the town was an administrative and commercial centre with a substantial Bengali professional population. Which means people moved here for work and the first thing they built was somewhere to pray. I have lost my thread but that is the better thought anyway. It sits on the Saura, the river that divides the old city from the Gulabbagh and Khushkibagh quarters. A river splitting a city, and a temple placed right on the seam. Still one of the busiest temples here. Sorry. Tea. Anyone?

03
cardio tennis clinics in 33306 — Kajha Kothi in Purnia, A large, low colonial mansion on the north-eastern side of the city, blending European and Indian forms: thick plastered walls, arched verandas and shuttered openings, with a large tank of standing water directly in front of it and old trees around. Smaller brick outbuildings, a temple and a small dargah stand within the same grounds
Stop three

Kajha Kothi

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set: 1775. This building. Put up as an indigo and administrative kothi in the first decades of East India Company control of Purnia — and the British took the place over administratively in 1770, so this went up five years into the arrangement, which is fast, that is a fast building. Indigo was cultivated on a large scale in this part of the district for roughly eighty years, and this kothi is the point the planting was supervised from. Someone stood in there and directed eighty years of fields. Eighty years is a working life and then some. It is a public heritage site and park now, which is a good ending. Not all of them get one.

04
cardio tennis clinics in 33306 — Purnia Zila School in Purnia, A long, single-storey colonial school building in the Civil Lines quarter, in rendered masonry with a deep pillared veranda running the length of the front, high shuttered windows and a broad shallow roof, set back behind a large open playing field and mature trees. The surrounding streets hold other low colonial-era bungalows and kothis on generous plots

Purnia Zila School

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set: 1800. Founded in 1800, which makes this school older than most of the things you would assume were older than it. Oldest school in Purnia, one of the oldest in Bihar, established in the decades after the British took over the district in 1770 and made it a military and administrative centre. And it stands in Civil Lines — the quarter laid out with the residences of European planters and officials, still the most legible colonial-period district in the city. You can read the street plan like a document, which is exactly what I have been doing instead of sleeping. Legible. That is the word. Right. I am going to sit down now.

The Purnia, India track

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

Mercury is doing something unhelpful, your racquet is strung too tight, and only one of those is my fault. Let us deal with the fixable one.

X-One Biphase in 17 gauge is a single 40-foot (12 m) set at 1.24 mm — one racquet, one job. It is a premium multifilament, thousands of fine fibres bonded with polyurethane and natural-gut-like in feel, and the Biphase construction reduces the friction between those fibres so the bundle keeps its plush feel instead of going slack in the middle after a fortnight.

It has been a reference comfort string in tennis for years. The thin gauge deepens everything: the ball sits in the bed longer, you feel more of it through the hand, and you get a heavier ball without swinging harder. Shock into the elbow is a fraction of what a co-polyester delivers. Thin strings are shorter-lived; that is written in the stars and also on the packet.

String at your normal tension.

Purnia is a city that takes its name from a goddess, which I regard as excellent practice. Puran Devi Mandir is its oldest temple, dedicated to Puran Devi, a form of Kali, documented from the Mughal period and counted locally among the Siddha Pithas. The city is generally held to be named for it.

You will string this everywhere from a matting court in the Civil Lines to an indoor hall down in Patna, and it is also perfect for the Purnia schoolmaster of a certain age who plays at six in the morning and fully intends to go on doing so.

Nearby stands the City Kali Bari, established by the Bengali community that settled here in the colonial period, on the Saura, the river that divides the old city. Kajha Kothi dates from 1775, raised as an indigo and administrative kothi in the first decades of Company control after the British took over the district in 1770.

And Purnia Zila School, founded in 1800, is the oldest school in the city and among the oldest in Bihar.
