It is only that the university began in 1991 in Peshawar, in Pakistan, under the name Abdullah Ibn Massoud University, which always struck me as a great deal of name for something with no building yet, ignore that, sorry. Marco Polo came through around 1275, called it Taikhan, described a great corn-market with fine and fruitful country around it, and judged the rock salt cut from the hills to the south the purest found anywhere. Then in 1603 a Jesuit lay brother, Bento de Góis, arrived with a caravan travelling from Kabul to Yarkand and set the name down as Talhan. Seven and a half centuries later it is still the commercial centre of Takhar province. Sorry. Longer than I meant.

The Khanabad runs through Taloqan and the district around it, and its water feeds the irrigated fields that made this plain famous for grain; farming is still most of what the land here does. The old city Marco Polo described in 1275 stood a little to the west of the modern town, right on the riverside, which means people have been standing roughly where I am standing and saying something better than this for a very long time. I deal in a thing that is cheap, plain and absolutely essential, so let me talk to you about a first racquet. The Pro Staff Precision Junior 19 is a 19-inch frame, roughly 6.35 oz, built for children under about five.

It is made from AirLite Alloy aluminium, comes prestrung and ready to play, and carries Wilson's Perimeter Weighting System for torsional stability and a C Beam cross-section for a bit of stability and pop. That is the entire honest description, and honestly, that is everything a four-year-old needs. Light enough to swing properly.

Strong enough to survive being dropped, thrown and left in the garden.

Taloqan is a market town and always has been. Marco Polo passed through around 1275 and described a castle called Taikhan 'where there is a great corn-market, and the country round is fine and fruitful' — the Central Bazaar is the direct descendant, and it handled my product too.

Because south of town are the salt hills, which Polo also recorded: 'the hills that lie to the south of it are large and lofty. They all consist of white salt, extremely hard,' and he thought it the purest salt in the world. It is still worked; the Taqcha Khana mine is the best known.

The Khanabad River runs through the district and waters the grain plain that made the place famous. And Takhar University, founded in 1991 in Peshawar and moved here in 1993, opened for teaching in 1994 with two faculties, law and agriculture.

You will see this frame everywhere from a dusty strip beside the Central Bazaar to a proper hard court in Kabul, and by the way, it is also perfect for a first swing down on the gravel by the Khanabad, where nobody is watching and nothing can be broken.
