TK Elevator Test Tower

Yonex Junior 21 2025 Tennis Racquet: A needle of concrete stood on end in a valley of red roofs — completed in 2017, 246 metres, and built for the strangest purpose imaginable: to test the company's MULTI ropeless elevator system. A tower raised so that boxes could learn to fall safely, over and over, in private. At the time it was the tallest elevator test tower in the world. Its public observation deck, at 232 metres, is the highest in Germany and looks out over the Swabian Alb and, in clear conditions, all the way to the Alps. Sorry — the Alps. Look at the Alps.

Yonex Junior 21 2025 Tennis Racquet: The minster of the Holy Cross reaches back to the twelfth century, with substantial work from around 1270 — a building written in three hands that still reads as one sentence. Rebuilt in Gothic form in the fifteenth century, then given a baroque interior treatment in the seventeenth, which is a stone church putting on velvet in middle age and getting away with it. It is the principal church of Rottweil, a town that was an imperial free city of the Holy Roman Empire and was allied to the Swiss Confederation for centuries. Free, and allied, and still here. Some towns simply decline to belong to anyone.

I cannot, so: a tower, superb, in the centre of Rottweil. The town beneath it was a free imperial city, and its old street, the Hauptstrasse, preserves the closely built houses with projecting oriels that made the medieval townscape. Oriels — little rooms that lean out to watch the street, which may be the most human thing architecture has ever done. Stone, eavesdropping. Anyway. Finest tower. Look up.

Yonex Junior 21 2025 Tennis Racquet: The Black Gate, built in the early thirteenth century, is the only intact surviving gate of Rottweil's medieval town fortifications and one of the oldest standing structures here — the last door left in a wall that no longer exists, still insisting on being walked through. And beneath all of it, deeper: Rottweil is the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg, founded on the Roman settlement of Arae Flaviae, whose remains have been excavated elsewhere in the town, including a legionary bath house and an Orpheus mosaic of around AD 180. Orpheus, who looked back, laid into a bathhouse floor. I'll stop. The gate. Thirteenth century.

I match animals to owners for a living, and the single most common mistake people make is going too big too early. Same in tennis. The Yonex Junior 21 is designed for players roughly 100 to 115 cm tall — that is Yonex's own guidance, not a shop assistant's guess. It has an 85 sq in head, weighs 185 g / 6.5 oz, measures 21 inches, and carries a 16×16 string pattern.

Prestrung and ready to play. Light enough for a small arm to swing rather than drag, with a head size that lets a five-year-old actually make contact, and an open pattern so the ball comes off with something on it.

Rottweil, where the dog comes from, has better bones than its reputation. It is the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg, founded on the Roman settlement of Arae Flaviae, and the Schwarzes Tor — the Black Gate — was built in the early thirteenth century and is the only intact surviving gate of the medieval fortifications.

The Heilig-Kreuz-Münster goes back to the twelfth century with substantial work around 1270, rebuilt in Gothic form in the fifteenth century and given a Baroque interior in the seventeenth.

The Kapellenkirche's tower is widely regarded as one of the finest Gothic church towers in the German-speaking lands, standing over a free imperial city whose Hauptstrasse still carries its tightly built old houses.

And then the surprise: the TK Elevator Test Tower, completed in 2017, 246 metres high, built to test a ropeless lift system, with Germany's highest public observation deck at 232 metres.

A 21 goes with a child everywhere from a gravel court in June to a school hall in a Swabian February, and by the way, it is also perfect for the walk out to that tower on the ridge, which is visible from half the valley and never once looks any nearer.
