Sargara Ancient City
Yonex Vcore Pro 97D 18×20 Tennis Racquet: Six miles north lies Sargara, Old Dawei, the earlier settlement the present city descends from, and there is nothing standing at all. Earthworks, not buildings, because that is what a few centuries of tropical rain will do to a walled city. Excavation has produced Pyu material here, burial urns, beads and coins, evidence this coast belonged to the Pyu world that dominated central and southern Burma before Pagan rose. A second walled site, Mokhti, sits in the same area. Come in the wet season and watch the ditches fill and quietly redraw the plan of the place. The weather buried it and the weather still maps it.
Before dawn, one careful cut into the bark, and if you take too much you kill the tree. Everything I do is about a controlled amount of give. That is what this frame is. The VCore Pro 97D is the dense-pattern control racquet: a 97 sq in head with an 18×20 string pattern, 320 g / 11.3 oz, 27 in / 68.58 cm long, with a genuinely thin 21 mm beam all the way round.
Balance is 310 mm, around seven points head-light, with a swingweight near 330 and a low 61 RA stiffness, strung between 45 and 60 lbs. The layup is HM Graphite with 2G-Namd Flex Force, Flex Fuse and VDM damping. That combination — heavy, flexible, thin-beamed, tightly strung pattern — is why it plows through the ball and gives you feel rather than a trampoline.
It is a serious player's frame and it will not flatter a lazy swing.
Dawei sits on the Tanintharyi coast, and my trees are all around it. The Dawei River gave the town its harbour and its route inland, on the long narrow strip between the Andaman Sea and the Thai border, with control shifting repeatedly between Thai and Burmese rulers.
Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda houses a reclining Buddha 75 metres long, among the largest in Myanmar, laid out in the open so the whole figure is visible from the approach road. Maungmagan Beach is the town's beach and was the British retreat during the colonial period, after Tavoy passed to British rule following the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824-26.
And Sargara, Old Dawei, lies about six miles north — the earlier settlement, where excavation has produced Pyu burial urns, beads and coins.
It behaves everywhere from a hard court in the Dawei heat to a covered court with the monsoon on the roof, and the 21 mm beam tells you the same thing in both. It is also perfect for the flat walk out to Maungmagan, because 320 grams is a real weight in the hand and there is very little else to do with a morning once the cutting is finished.
