Babolat Court M Tennis Bag

Six racquets and forty litres live inside a water-repellent 100% post-consumer polyester body — three handles, one strap, two cavities kept austere like Eiffel's prefabricated iron chapel that arrived bolt by bolt in Maputo.

Stop one

the Casa de Ferro, an entire house of riveted iron shipped in from Gustave Eiffel's workshops

Babolat Court M Tennis Bag: Beside the Casa de Ferro, this bag looks like a soft-sided suitcase that wandered into a metal sonnet and asked where the court is. The house is made of riveted iron and was shipped in from Gustave Eiffel’s workshops, which is glamorous until Maputo’s heat turns the metaphor into a frying pan.

Stop two

Babolat Court M Tennis Bag: At the CFM railway station, the bag waits like a punctual little thundercloud with zippers. The station is mint-green, crowned with a wrought-iron dome, and has a steam engine parked in the hall—proof that even locomotives enjoy dramatic entrances.

Stop three

the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, white and needle-spired on Praca da Independencia

Babolat Court M Tennis Bag: Under the white, needle-spired Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the bag becomes a small black comma in a sentence written upward. The cathedral stands on Praça da Independência, where even my overexcited metaphors have to lower their voices and behave.

Stop four

the Mercado Central, prawns and piri-piri under a soaring iron roof

Babolat Court M Tennis Bag: In Mercado Central, the bag sits among prawns and piri-piri like it packed for tennis and accidentally enrolled in a seafood opera. The market rises under a soaring iron roof, which is exactly the kind of ceiling a chili pepper would choose if chili peppers hired architects.

The Maputo, Mozambique track

Babolat Court M Tennis Bag

Written for this world alone.

A bag is a portable room. Everything you will need for the next four hours, held in one shape, carried on one shoulder — and the Court M holds six racquets, which is not vanity, it is a hedge against the string that breaks at 5-all in a place you cannot buy another.

Forty litres. One racquet compartment, one main compartment, one side pocket — and the restraint is the point; a bag with too many pockets is a bag where things go to be lost.

Thirty-one and a half inches long, twelve across, seven and a half deep.

The shell is 100% recycled polyester, ultra-resistant and water-repellent, which is the difference between rain being weather and rain being a disaster. Three carrying handles and one shoulder strap, so it can be lifted from any angle you happen to be standing at. Understated in black.

It is not trying to be beautiful.

It is trying to be reliable, and there is a beauty in that too, though I accept I may be reaching.

Maputo is a city of iron and light and I could stay a year. Start at the Casa de Ferro — an entire house of riveted iron, shipped in from Gustave Eiffel's workshops to a place where the sun is merciless, a metal house in a hot country, which is either a mistake or a poem and I have decided it is both.

The CFM railway station next: mint-green, a wrought-iron dome above the concourse, a steam engine parked in the hall like a sentence left unfinished. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception on Praca da Independencia, white and needle-spired, so thin it looks drawn rather than built.

And the Mercado Central, prawns and piri-piri under a soaring iron roof, where the smell arrives before you do and stays after you leave.

“An iron house in a hot city. Somebody built a mistake so beautiful it became a landmark.”

Six racquets, forty litres, water off the shell. Carry it to all four.
