Coral Ridge tennis lessons — Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine at the restored Citadel of Shymkent's Old Town with rebuilt walls, a caravanserai, and a pool
Stop one

the restored Citadel of Shymkent's Old Town, a caravanserai and pool inside rebuilt walls

Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine: Wonderful, we’re inside rebuilt citadel walls with a caravanserai and a pool, which is historically helpful and also gives me at least three things to worry about dropping a clamp into. Everyone admire Old Town quickly, please; I’ve counted the exits and I do not trust those clouds.

02
Coral Ridge tennis lessons — Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine at Ordabasy Square beneath the Zher-Ana column
Stop two

Ordabasy Square, where the three Kazakh juzes swore peace in 1728, under the Zher-Ana column

Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine: Ordabasy Square marks the place where the three Kazakh juzes swore peace in 1728 under the Zher-Ana column, which is inspiring, yes, but could we also swear not to wander off? I’m holding a stringing machine and the wind has become politically unstable.

03
Coral Ridge tennis lessons — Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine in Independence Park near the Altyn Shanyrak monument of 137 metal ribs
Stop three

Independence Park and its Altyn Shanyrak monument of 137 metal ribs

Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine: Independence Park’s Altyn Shanyrak monument rises with 137 metal ribs, a beautiful symbol unless you’re me and immediately wonder which rib the sudden gust will aim for. Stay together; national symbolism is best enjoyed before anyone loses the starting clamp.

04
Coral Ridge tennis lessons — Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine at the Jami Mosque with its column-supported open terrace
Stop four

the Jami Mosque, the city's oldest, its open terrace carried on columns

Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine: The Jami Mosque is the city’s oldest, and its open terrace is carried on columns, which I respect deeply while also checking whether any pigeons are plotting from above. Quiet voices, respectful steps, and nobody bump the tension head, please.

The Shymkent, Kazakhstan track

Gamma 6004 6 Point Mount Tennis Stringing Machine

Written for this world alone.

Before we begin I have counted the exits in this room. Two, and one of them is the door you came in by. Good. Now let me be careful and honest with you about the Gamma 6004, because I would rather you were worried in the shop than surprised at home: this is a crank machine. There is no motor in it. No digital panel, nothing that beeps, nothing that goes dark when the power does.

You turn a handle and the tension comes on. And yes, that means the pull is only as steady as your hand — but a machine that cannot switch on also cannot switch off in the middle of a string job, and I have thought about that a great deal.

The build is where the nerves settle. A six-point A600 suspension mounting system holds the frame at six places instead of two, with MARC clamp bases and MMSC string clamps, and quick-locking mounting stands so nothing shifts while you are looking at something else.

The turntable is bead-blasted so the clamps slide clean, spins a full 360 degrees, and locks with a brake when you want it still. The handle itself can be set up for a right-handed or a left-handed stringer, which nobody thinks about until they are standing at the wrong side of it at eleven at night.

The string gripper and the crank handle are stainless steel.

The clamps are universal — the teeth spacing takes tennis and badminton both. It arrives with a floor stand, a machine cover, a starting clamp, a tool set and practice string, and it carries a five-year limited warranty, which is the part I read first and twice.

What if I told you there is a city built entirely on the same instinct? Shymkent, in Kazakhstan, has been rebuilt behind its own walls more times than anyone has properly counted, and it keeps putting the walls back. My kind of people.

Careful people, is what I am saying.

"A machine that cannot switch on cannot switch off halfway through."
