I want to start by interrogating the name, because the name is doing something odd and I would rather point at it than pretend I have not noticed. Outerwear is not a garment. It is a category — the shelf, not the thing on it. So before anything else: what is this, exactly? A jacket, a pullover, a half-zip?
I went looking, properly, on every route I could find, and the manufacturer's own catalogue would not open on any of them. Which means I cannot tell you whether it zips, whether it has a hood, what the pockets are, what the fibre split is, or how it is cut.
I am not going to describe a garment I could not get a look at.
If that is unsatisfying, good — it should be, and I would rather you were unsatisfied by the truth than comfortable with something I made up.
Fleece is a real and well-understood thing: a knitted fabric brushed to raise the surface fibres into a pile, which traps still air against the body. Still air is the actual insulator; the fabric is just the cage that holds it.
Here is what I can stand behind, and it is not nothing.
That is why fleece is warm for its weight, and also why it does nothing whatsoever against wind — a breeze goes straight through the pile and takes the trapped air with it. So if somebody tells you a fleece layer will keep the wind off, ask them how. And this is NikeCourt, which is Nike's tennis line rather than its general sportswear, which at least tells you the intended user.
Good evidence, as far as it goes. It simply does not go as far as I would like.
Nanterre is the right city for a healthy suspicion, because it is full of things that do not look like what they are. The Parc André-Malraux is twenty-five hectares of landscaped ground, and the landscape is made of spoil — the earth dug out to build the office towers, piled up and planted. A park that is literally the hole from somewhere else, inverted.
And the Tours Aillaud are eighteen residential towers faced in a mosaic of painted clouds with round porthole windows, which sounds like a folly and is in fact housing.
You will wear this everywhere from a cold evening session back home to the length of that park, and by the way, it is well suited to a night at the arena, which seats 30,680 under a fixed roof and is, at least, exactly what it says it is.
Outerwear is a category, not a garment. That is the shelf, not the thing on it.
