Start with the word everybody skips. Premium. In Nike's own usage, PRM means one of two things and sometimes both: better materials than the standard version, or elevated and more intricate work on the cosmetics. It does not mean a different shoe underneath.
That is worth knowing before you spend, because half the people buying a premium anything believe they are buying a second, better engine, and they are usually buying a better paint job on the same one. Sometimes that is exactly what you want.
But know which you are doing.
The platform underneath is the GP Challenge 1, and it is built for one job: hard court, and a lot of it. Synthetic and mesh through the upper, so it is light and it breathes.
A rubber drag-guard sits on the medial toe box — the inside edge, where a right-hander's toe scrapes the court on a serve, which is the exact spot that kills most shoes and which most people never look at until there is a hole in it. Extra padding round the ankle collar.
Integrated lacing running to a lateral belt, which is how the shoe holds your foot down when you push off sideways. Zoom Air units under the forefoot and the heel for return, and a stability plate through the middle that resists torsional twisting — meaning the sole will not wring itself out like a cloth when you change direction.
The outsole is high-abrasion rubber in a herringbone pattern, and here is the detail I like: the rubber is denser on the medial forefoot where the wear happens, and the tread is finer on the lateral side to help you slide. Two different behaviours, one sole.
Somebody thought about that.
Aksaray has a lead I could not ignore. The Kizil Minare — the Red Minaret — leans. It is a well-known landmark and it is not straight, and a leaning tower is always the same case: something moved underneath, slowly, over centuries, while the thing above it stayed exactly where it was put.
You will wear these everywhere from a hot afternoon hard court to a long day on your feet, and while you are here — the Zinciriye Medrese houses the Aksaray Museum, which is where the town keeps its evidence. Then out on the Konya road stands the Sultanhani Caravanserai, a fortified stone inn built so that merchants and their animals could stop safely overnight.
A building designed entirely around the risk of the road. My kind of architecture. Finish at the Ihlara Valley, where the Melendiz River has cut a gorge into the rock and people carved churches into the sides of it. Everybody hides something in a valley. Some of them get remembered for it.
