Sergio Tacchini Eredita Track Italian Flag Capsule Men's Tennis Pants

Track twill does the decorum here: diagonal ribs set the fall (yes, ribs, plural; I counted 2.000 directions), an athletic taper, tricolore detailing, ST parked on the thigh. Not tech kit, just correctly made. Dome tangent: the central one is elliptical. Molfetta, Italy

Stop one

the Duomo Vecchio di San Corrado, three domes in a row between two towers

Sergio Tacchini Eredita Track Italian Flag Capsule Men's Tennis Pants: Behold the Duomo Vecchio di San Corrado, whose three aligned domes sit between two towers with the sort of architectural symmetry that makes a pedant purr at approximately 73.214 decibels. It is a Romanesque church of Molfetta, dedicated to San Corrado—patronage, masonry, and excellent trouser adjacency, all duly footnoted.

Stop two

the Torrione Passari, the last drum of the sea walls

Sergio Tacchini Eredita Track Italian Flag Capsule Men's Tennis Pants: The Torrione Passari is the remaining cylindrical drum of Molfetta’s sea walls, which is to say a defensive punctuation mark, not—strictly speaking—a very large cannolo. The pants stand by it bravely, despite being fortified mainly with cuffs and brand heritage.

Stop three

the Baroque cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, holding San Corrado's relics

Sergio Tacchini Eredita Track Italian Flag Capsule Men's Tennis Pants: Santa Maria Assunta is Molfetta’s Baroque cathedral and keeps the relics of San Corrado, a fact requiring solemnity for 2.000 seconds before we return to the trousers. Note, too, that “Baroque” does not mean “overdressed”—though this ensemble is making a respectable counterargument.

Stop four

Il Pulo, a sinkhole 180 metres across pitted with Neolithic caves

Sergio Tacchini Eredita Track Italian Flag Capsule Men's Tennis Pants: Il Pulo is a karst sinkhole about 180 metres across and pitted with Neolithic caves, because geology apparently enjoys both drama and archival depth. The pants, wisely, do not attempt spelunking; they merely register the abyss with Italianate composure.

The Molfetta, Italy track

Written for this world alone.

A note on the name before anything else, because it will bother me otherwise. Eredita is Italian for heritage or inheritance (strictly, eredità, with the accent on the final a, which the marketing has dropped and I have not). The Italian Flag Capsule is exactly what it sounds like: a small run of pieces carrying the green, white and red as detailing. Right. Now the cloth.

Track twill, which is — and this is the part I enjoy — a weave in which the weft passes over one warp thread and under two or more, stepping sideways by one on each successive row, which produces the diagonal rib you can see if you hold it to the light at an angle (do it, it is worth the four seconds). That structure gives the fabric its durability and its hang.

The cut is a clean athletic fit, made for everyday movement rather than for competition; the flag colours appear as detailing rather than as blocks; and the Sergio Tacchini logo sits on the left thigh. There is a matching Eredita track jacket, sold separately, which pedantically I should mention because the pieces are designed as a pair.

What these are not: performance tights, weather protection, or in any sense technical. They are a track pant, correctly made. Not 1965 — that is a common slip and I have corrected it twice this week.

The house was founded in 1966.

Molfetta, which is the right city for an Italian capsule, has a cathedral with three domes in a row between two towers, and the middle dome is elliptical while the outer two are not, which almost nobody points out. The Torrione Passari is the last surviving drum of the sea walls — the last, singular.

And Il Pulo, just inland, is a sinkhole about a hundred and eighty metres across, pitted with caves that were occupied in the Neolithic.

Eredità, with the accent. The garment dropped it. I am putting it back.
