Right, so, Henrik was supposed to do this one. Henrik is — well, Henrik is the one you actually want. He has a whole system, Henrik does. Little notecards, a blazer that fits, a way of pausing before he says the word 'polyester' that makes it sound like he's about to reveal the location of a buried treasure. I am not Henrik. Henrik is at a conference.
I was told to just, quote, be natural, which is the most terrifying instruction anyone has ever given me, so let's simply get on with it and I'll try not to embarrass either of us.
The Volkl V-Square. 19 gauge. That's approximately 1.00 millimetres in diameter, for those of you keeping score at home, and I want you to notice how I said 'approximately' there, because Henrik would have said it with absolute certainty and a small, knowing nod. I am being honest with you.
It is in that neighbourhood.
1.00mm, a genuine hair's width from the thinner end of the polyester world, and that matters because the thinner the string, the more it bites into the ball, the more spin it generates, the more you feel like you are actually controlling something in your life. Which, given that we are all just standing here in Silkeborg in the middle of Denmark, is not nothing.
Silkeborg is — and look, Henrik would have a lovely segue here, I'm just going to say it plainly — it is a genuinely beautiful place. The lakes. The quiet. Museum Jorn is around the corner, full of colour and controlled chaos, which is, I suppose, what a well-strung racket full of Volkl V-Square actually looks like from the inside.
The Silkeborg Museum has the Tollund Man, which is a face preserved in a peat bog for over two thousand years, and I mention this not to be morbid but because when you mis-hit a ball with a cheap string job, part of you also feels preserved in something ancient and airless. The V-Square, I am happy to report, is the antidote to that feeling.
The string is a monofilament polyester, co-polyester construction, and it comes in a standard set length — enough to string one racket, which is all you need unless you are Henrik, who apparently keeps several pre-strung in a bag like a person with genuine foresight.
The V-Square profile — and here is where it gets interesting, even for someone like me who was handed the product notes eleven minutes ago — has a squared, or at least subtly shaped cross-section rather than a perfectly round one. This is the whole point of the name, if you were wondering.
That geometry creates additional edge contact on the ball, which means more snap-back, more spin potential, and a response off the strings that feels sharper and more intentional than a standard round poly would give you.
Who is this for? I will tell you honestly: it's a string for players who already know what they're doing with topspin and want the string to cooperate rather than merely tolerate them. It suits intermediate to advanced players, the kind of person who has opinions about string tension and expresses those opinions at dinner.

It is not a beginner's string. Beginners should first attend, I don't know, Fort Lauderdale themed classes for cardiovascular tennis before working up to a 1.00mm co-poly with an angular cross-section and real spin ambitions. The V-Square rewards technique. It will not lend you technique it doesn't believe you've earned.
I was also going to work in something about AQUA Aquarium and Wildlife Park, which is genuinely here in Silkeborg and is wonderful, and the connection I had prepared was something about how the otters there exhibit a wrist snap not unlike a quality topspin forehand, and even as I say that I can hear how it sounds, but I stand by the observation.
I also walked past Silkeborg Church on the way in, very calm, very old, very much the energy you want in your string when you are down a break in the third set.
Bottom line, and I mean this: the Volkl V-Square 19g is a serious piece of equipment from a serious manufacturer, and if Henrik were here he would say it better, but what he would say would not be more true than what I've just told you. It's good. It really is quite good. I hope that's enough. I think that's enough.
