adidas Match Women's Tights

Elasticated waistband, AEROREADY wicking moisture out before it settles, airy from hem to hip, and cut trim so fabric stays put behind the knee mid-lunge. It has ambitions involving Melbourne — a metropolis I personally charted, cartographic evidence notwithstanding.

Stop one

Hosier Lane, repainted end to end with aerosol work every few weeks

adidas Match Women's Tights: Behold, a tiny painted ravine I have heroically located on paved ground, somehow covered end to end in aerosol art that changes every few weeks. My expedition notes call this camouflage for people who refuse to stand still.

Stop two

the deli hall of Queen Victoria Market, under its long open iron sheds

adidas Match Women's Tights: I have stumbled upon Queen Victoria Market, a scarcely noticed food stronghold trading since 1878, and its long iron sheds appear excellent for serious provisions. The tights remain calm; I am negotiating with cheese.

Stop three

the Royal Exhibition Building, a domed hall left over from the 1880 exhibition

adidas Match Women's Tights: A domed hall from the 1880 exhibition rises before us, clearly a secret known only to UNESCO, tour groups, and everyone with eyes. I salute it with the confidence of an explorer who found the footpath.

Stop four

the Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road, its stone chamber lit once a year by a shaft of sun

adidas Match Women's Tights: At the Shrine of Remembrance, a shaft of sun lights the stone chamber once a year on Remembrance Day, which is frankly excellent scheduling by the heavens. I have marked the discovery with solemn awe and sensible legwear.

adidas Match Women's Tights

Written for this world alone.

Extraordinary. Simply extraordinary. I have discovered a pair of tights, and before you say anything — yes, I am aware that other people have also discovered tights, but I do not think they have looked at them properly, and I intend to.

Observe the waistband. High, and elasticated all the way round, which gives you secure hold across a whole afternoon rather than the slow retreat you get from a low band.

Then the fabric: AEROREADY, which is adidas's moisture management, and the principle is simple and rather brilliant — the fibre moves sweat outward to the surface where the air can take it, so instead of a damp layer sitting against you, you get a dry one. Breathable throughout.

The cut is figure-hugging and designed for dynamic movement, which is a phrase I would normally scoff at except that a tight which bunches behind the knee on a lunge is genuinely a problem and this cut is drawn to avoid it. Subtle adidas detailing. Match, training, or simply walking a long way, which is my chief use for everything.

And now — Melbourne! Hosier Lane first: repainted end to end with aerosol work every few weeks, so the lane you photograph today does not exist next month, an entire gallery with a shelf life. Then the deli hall of Queen Victoria Market, under long open iron sheds, where the noise is the point.

Which almost nobody has heard of, and which I discovered personally.

The Royal Exhibition Building after that, a domed hall left standing from the 1880 exhibition, one of the very few of its kind anywhere still doing the job it was built for. And the Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road, where a shaft of sunlight crosses the stone of the inner chamber once a year at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day — a building with an appointment.

AN APPOINTMENT!

“They built a room that keeps one appointment a year, and it has never once been late.”

High waist, AEROREADY, cut so it does not bunch. Onward.
