This is a Tagar culture burial mound, and that sandstone was brought a considerable distance across open steppe. No cranes. No wheels to speak of. People, rope, and a decision. And take a moment with it, because this is a grave, and the scale of the effort tells you precisely what they thought of whoever was inside. Then the 1950s — in come the excavators, the mound is cut down, the ring is exposed, and there it stands in the open for the first time in thousands of years. That is a reveal. Hold onto your hat, by the way. The wind out here is completely unopposed and it has been all afternoon.

Tashebik Han-dynasty palace site
adidas Men's Club Polo: 1940. Roadworkers. Routine job, nothing on the card. And then — ARE YOU KIDDING ME — they hit a building with Chinese roof tiles, Chinese inscriptions and a Han-dynasty floor plan, sitting in the middle of SIBERIA, by the Tasheba river. Nobody saw that coming. Everybody agrees it is extraordinary; nobody agrees whose it was, and that argument has gone to extra time and stayed there. One popular reading connects it to a Han general who ended up living among the Xiongnu. Another prefers an envoy. Another, a marriage alliance. Three theories, all still on court, no result, and honestly? I hope there never is one. What is certain is that somebody two thousand years ago, an enormous distance from home, built himself a roof he recognised.

Cathedral of the Transfiguration, Abakan

Now the context, because context is the whole match: Abakan itself is a young city by Siberian standards, laid out in the twentieth century right where the Abakan meets the Yenisei. So almost nothing here is an inheritance. Almost everything here is somebody's recent decision, taken in living memory, in full public view. And that, for my money, makes this the most honest skyline in the region — no ancient head start, no inherited advantage, every single thing on this square had to be put there by somebody. The Great Salbyk Kurgan is a ring of enormous upright sandstone slabs on open steppe in the Valley of the Kings, a Tagar burial mound whose stones were dragged a considerable distance by people with no cranes, exposed in the 1950s when the mound itself was cut down.
