Clay is a weather surface. That is the first thing to understand and almost nobody says it. Rain, and it goes from fast to dead. Sun, and it dries into loose dust that slides under you like scree. This is the clay-court build of the Court FF 3, women's, and the entire reason it exists is that the ground here refuses to hold still.
The Court FF 3 platform is built to give you a stable landing and take load off the body, so more of your energy goes into the swing instead of into absorbing the stop. A TWISTRUSS support system runs through the midfoot for quicker turns and a smoother crossover step.
What makes this one the clay version is underneath: a clay-specific outsole, patterned to bite into loose granular surface and then release it, because a clay shoe that grips and does not let go is how ankles get hurt. It also has to stop the court from packing into the tread, which is the other half of the problem and the half everybody forgets.
All-court fits are for hard courts. This is not that.
Harare sits at about fifteen hundred metres and gets the most dramatic afternoon storm build I have seen anywhere — that is why I am here. Start on the Kopje, the granite rise looking straight down on the downtown grid, and if there is weather coming you will see it forty minutes out from up there.
The Anglican Cathedral of St Mary and All Saints, finished in 1904, stone, cool inside on the worst afternoon. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe and its stone sculpture garden, where the work is outdoors and takes the rain on purpose.
And the Eastgate Centre — a large building cooled with no air conditioning at all, ventilated on the model of a termite mound, chimneys pulling the night's cold air through the mass of the structure and releasing it through the day. I have never got over it.
Somebody looked at an insect and solved a heat problem.
“They cooled an entire building by copying a termite. Nature had already run the experiment.”
Wear the clay outsole on clay. The sky in Harare does not do anything by halves and neither does the court after it.
