Danzandarjaa Khiid (Danzandarjaa Monastery)

Babolat Carlitos 21 Junior Tennis Racquet: Rebuilt and reopened in June 1990, at the end of state atheism — a monastery exhaling after fifty years of holding its breath. It stands in place of Mörönii Khuree, founded on this ground around 1890, which housed some two thousand monks before the monasteries were closed in the late 1930s. Two thousand voices, and then a silence you could walk across. Mörön itself was established in 1933 as the administrative centre of Khövsgöl province, laid out on the ground the old monastery had occupied — a town built on the footprint of a prayer. Which is, yes, the fact. I'm getting to the fact.

Khövsgöl Aimag Museum

Babolat Carlitos 21 Junior Tennis Racquet: More than four thousand objects — picture a river that has agreed to hold still. The provincial museum covers the peoples of Khövsgöl: the Darkhad, the Khotgoid, the Buriad, and the reindeer-herding Dukha, the Tsaatan, who move through the northern taiga the way weather moves through a valley. There is archaeology too, from the Bronze Age stone monuments that fill the Delgermörön valley around the town. Four thousand objects, and every one of them was somebody's ordinary Tuesday, kept. Sorry — four thousand, Bronze Age, standing stones. I did have a point and it has wandered off into the trees.

The Delgermörön River and the Mörön bridge

Babolat Carlitos 21 Junior Tennis Racquet: The town is named for the water: mörön means river in Mongolian. Say the name and you have already said the town. The Delgermörön meets the Ider and together they become the Selenge, which runs north into Russia and is by far the largest inflow to Lake Baikal — a river that leaves home, takes a new name, and ends up filling the deepest lake on earth, which will ruin your afternoon if you think about it too long. Its valley also holds one of the densest concentrations of Bronze Age standing stones and stone mounds anywhere in Mongolia. The stones stayed. The water went.

Lake Khövsgöl at Khatgal

Babolat Carlitos 21 Junior Tennis Racquet: Mongolia's deepest lake at 262 metres, holding roughly seventy per cent of the country's fresh water and around one per cent of the world's — one blue eye keeping most of a nation's thirst inside it. Khatgal was built up in the twentieth century as the lake port, where barges carried freight across the water on the trade route to Siberia. A harbour in a country with no sea: either poetry or logistics, and here it is both, which is my favourite condition for anything. The lake and its basin became Khövsgöl Nuur National Park in 1992.

Written for this world alone.

LISTEN UP, RECRUIT. This is the Babolat Carlitos 21 Junior Tennis Racquet and it is now YOUR responsibility. Twenty-one inches. SAY IT BACK. Eighty-six square inches of head, because at ages 5 to 7 you WILL miss the middle and this frame WILL cover for you until you EARN the middle.

Six point seven ounces strung — light enough for a small soldier between 110 and 125 centimeters to swing ALL DAY WITHOUT WHINING. Aluminum construction. Aluminum does not cry. It comes PRE-STRUNG because nobody in this outfit waits around, and it carries visual teaching aids ON THE FRAME so there is NO EXCUSE for a wrong grip. NONE.

The design honors Carlos Alcaraz, a man who DRILLED. You want his forehand? EARN IT.

Your posting is Mörön, Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia. Gateway to the great lake. The name means 'RIVER.' Winters are hard. The steppe does not care about your feelings and neither do I — that is why we train. Out on the plain west of town stand fourteen deer stones, carved as much as FOUR THOUSAND YEARS AGO, still standing at attention. THAT is posture, recruit.

THAT is commitment. A UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2023 — they didn't get that for slouching. THIS FRAME DEPLOYS everywhere from a frozen court in a Mörön January to a gravel bar on the Delgermörön in July, and by the way, it is also perfect for the shore at Khatgal, where the water is so clear you can see your own footwork failing on the bottom.
