Let me be straight with you, because I would want the same courtesy. A headband has a very short specification, and anyone who writes you three paragraphs of engineering about one is selling you something other than a headband. This is a Babolat sweatband for the head, with the double-line detail the name refers to. Its job is to stop sweat reaching your eyes. That is the claim.
I have tested it and the claim is supportable.
What can be verified: it is a technical polyester knit built for absorption, which is what these are made from and why they dry between sets instead of staying sodden; and it holds the hair back, which is the second job and the one people actually buy it for.
What I will not tell you is how many millilitres it absorbs or how many wash cycles it survives, because I have not seen a test and I am not going to invent one. If a description ever gives you a number for a headband, ask where the number came from.
Nobody will be able to tell you.
Lomé, on the other hand, is a city where the evidence is unusually good, which is why I like it. The Grand Marche runs three tiers of wax-print cloth, and the traders who built the trade were known as the Nana Benz — named for the cars they bought with the proceeds, which is about as documented as a nickname gets.
The Akodessewa market sells skulls and dried animal parts as remedies, and I will happily interrogate the pharmacology with anyone who wants to, though I note the sellers are more precise about what each item is for than most people expect. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart stands pink and white with Gothic windows above the port road.
And the Palais de Lome, a governor's palace of 1905 in gardens facing the sea, which is now a public arts venue — a building that changed its purpose completely and did not have to lie about its past to do it. I am always pleased to be proven wrong in that direction.
“Ask where the number came from. If nobody can tell you, it is not a number, it is a mood.”
A short spec, honestly stated. That is worth more than a long one that is guessing.
