Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes

This is the Jet reduced to essentials, fleet and unadorned and frank about being a sprinter's rather than a cushion. Darling, it takes no stage until Naypyidaw has been played, four scenes, so wear something you can move in.

Naypyidaw, Myanmar
01
cardiovascular tennis Harbor Beach — Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes at the base of Uppatasanti Pagoda, Naypyidaw
Stop one

the Uppatasanti Pagoda, a near-exact copy of Shwedagon built one foot shorter, hollow inside

Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes: [Steps forward, pressing both hands to sternum.] DO YOU FEEL THAT? This pagoda — built as a near-EXACT replica of the Shwedagon, one foot shorter, one single foot, as if humility demanded a ruler — is HOLLOW inside, people. HOLLOW. [Whispers.] Like a dream of the sacred. Like these shoes, which are very much NOT hollow and will carry your footwork through every volley with a precision this pagoda's architects would have WEPT to achieve.

Stop two

the white elephants kept in a pavilion at the pagoda's foot

Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes: [Clutches imaginary pearls.] White elephants — REAL ones, kept here in a pavilion at the pagoda's very foot — are considered auspicious omens of a righteous ruler in Burmese tradition, and I need everyone to PAUSE and honour that. [Turns slowly.] These shoes are also an omen. An omen that your lateral movement on clay is about to become genuinely, breathtakingly, PROPHETICALLY good.

03
cardiovascular tennis Harbor Beach — Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes placed among miniature landmarks at the National Landmark Garden, Naypyidaw
Stop three

the National Landmark Garden, the whole country laid out in walk-through miniature

Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes: [Spreads arms wide, nearly toppling.] They have built the ENTIRE COUNTRY in miniature — every monument, every river bend, every significant site — so you may walk through all of Myanmar in a single afternoon, and I find that PROFOUNDLY theatrical and I WILL NOT apologise for the tears. [Composes self.] Much like this garden condenses a nation into a stroll, these shoes condense elite performance technology into 280 grams — give or take — of pure competitive intention.

04
cardiovascular tennis Harbor Beach — Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes on Yaza Htarni Road, the twenty-lane boulevard passing the parliament complex, Naypyidaw
Stop four

Yaza Htarni Road, twenty lanes of empty tarmac running past the parliament complex

Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes: [Walks slowly to centre stage, gestures at the vast empty tarmac.] Twenty lanes. TWENTY. Running past the parliament buildings, and virtually no traffic — this road exists at a scale that makes the human body feel like a footnote, and I am MOVED, I am UNDONE by the audacity of it. [Snaps back.] The only thing that should be moving across any expanse this wide, this fast, this purposefully, is YOU — in these shoes — chasing down a cross-court backhand.

The Naypyidaw, Myanmar track

Babolat Jet Mach Women's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Places, everyone. The women's Jet Mach enters from the left, and it enters fast, because that is the entire character. This is the light, low, close-cut Babolat speed shoe: a woven upper, a snug fit, an outsole built for quick starts and hard stops. It is not the wide-fit comfort model and it should not audition for that part.

Cast it correctly and it is superb; cast it wrong and you will spend the second act complaining about your feet.

The wardrobe notes, and I am only reading you what is written down. The Jet Mach construction runs a woven aramid-and-polyamide upper, so support arrives through the fabric rather than through a scaffold of overlays — that is how the silhouette stays this clean.

Underneath is a Michelin rubber outsole, the arrangement Babolat has used across this line precisely because a shoe this light needs a sole that refuses to wear through. The fit is low-volume, the profile close to the court, the whole thing designed around changing direction rather than standing still.

Babolat opened in Lyon in 1875 and has spent the entire run since then in the same one-act play, which is more commitment than most of my performers manage.

And now the setting, darling, and what a setting. The Uppatasanti Pagoda is a near-exact copy of Shwedagon raised deliberately one foot shorter — you cannot upstage the original, so you build to within a foot of it, which is either humility or the loudest possible whisper — and unlike its model this one is hollow inside.

Naypyidaw is a capital built as a set.

Yaza Htarni Road runs twenty lanes of empty tarmac past the parliament, a stage with no company on it. You will get use out of these everywhere from that impossible empty boulevard to a hard court back home in November, and by the way, they are also perfect for a bowl of mohinga at dawn, eaten early, before the heat takes the scene from you.

"Naypyidaw built a twenty-lane road and cast nobody in it. Enter, alone, at speed."
