Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet)

This is twelve frames' worth of volume, three insulated compartments and a shoe pocket, which per litre is the finest bargain in the aisle, and I will show my working. Nothing is bought before Joensuu has been walked, and since one of the four stops charges nothing at all, we begin from the free one.

Joensuu, Finland

The granite and plaster art nouveau facade and its tower seen from low on the pavement in early raking light, the worn stone steps of the entrance close in the foreground.
Stop one

Joensuu Town Hall

Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Everybody inside, quickly, count off, that is nine of you and I started with nine. Good. Now: Eliel Saarinen designed this, finished 1914, granite and plaster, art nouveau, that tall tower on Rantakatu, and yes, that Saarinen, the leading architect in the country, won by open competition, in a town of a few thousand out on the eastern edge. Wonderful. Also there is a theatre inside the town hall, which means at any given moment bureaucracy and drama are sharing one roof and, more to the point, one set of exits. I have counted them. There are enough. Probably. Do not everybody stand on the same side of the tower balcony, it is fine, it is completely fine, I would simply rather you did not.

The pale-painted wooden church with its gilded onion dome seen straight on at eye level in bright midday light, a park bench and birch trunks in the middle distance.
Stop two

St Nicholas Orthodox Church

Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Now. This church is made of wood. Wood. Painted pale, gilded onion dome, consecrated in the 1880s, sitting in a small park, and I need everyone to make a mental note of the door we came in by. It is here because Joensuu sits in Karelia, where the Orthodox tradition is part of the ordinary religious map of Finland, not an import and not exotic, simply the eastern half of this country's own history. The icons inside are genuinely worth the visit and I will be looking at them from a position near the aisle. Candles. Timber. Candles and timber. I am sure it is all extremely well managed. It has stood for a hundred and forty years, which either reassures you or does the opposite, and I am afraid I know which it does to me.

Stop three

Ilosaari

Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Ilosaari. It is an island. In the Pielisjoki. With water, I want to be clear, on every side. And every summer they put a rock festival on it: Ilosaarirock has run here since 1971, one of the oldest continuously organised rock festivals in Europe, and it was started by local young people rather than by any promoter, which I admire enormously and which does not lower my pulse even slightly. Fifty-odd years of a small city out east insisting it gets the good bands too. Beautiful. Also thousands of people on a river island with a finite number of bridges. They have clearly thought about it. They have thought about it every year since 1971 and nothing has happened. Which is exactly how long a run of good luck looks from the inside. Stay together.

Stop four

Botania

Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Last stop and, honestly, my favourite, which for me means the one that worries me the least. Botania: a domed tropical greenhouse and butterfly garden on the university campus, on the eastern bank of the Pielisjoki. Live butterflies. In eastern Finland. Where the winter does what the winter does, for five months, in the dark. Somebody looked at that and decided the correct response was a heated glass dome full of orchids and moths, and attached it to a university so it would never be allowed to close. That is either lunacy or genius and I have decided, for my own sake, that it is genius. It is very warm in there and the air is very wet. Leave your coats with me. I am a bag. It is the one thing today I can absolutely guarantee.

The Joensuu, Finland track

Babolat Pure Aero Tennis Bag (12 Racquet)

Written for this world alone.

Twelve racquets, three main compartments, roughly 85 litres. The layout is 2 / 6 / 4, and two of those three compartments are lined with Babolat's isothermal material — the point being tension, not comfort: strings lose tension fastest when the frame swings between a hot car boot and a cold morning, and an insulated wall slows that down.

Alongside the mains there are two side compartments, a zipped accessory pocket and a separate shoe pocket, so wet shoes never share a wall with a frame.

The shell is 600D polyester with a PVC coating, water-resistant and genuinely hard-wearing, and the body is built from 90% recycled polyester with 10% EVA in the structure. It carries as a backpack on padded straps or over one shoulder.

Do the arithmetic before you decide it is too much bag: a 12-pack is the size at which you stop owning a second bag for shoes, a third for overnight kit and a spare for the kids' frames.

Joensuu will approve of that reasoning, because Joensuu is a city that has always known exactly what a thing is worth.

It sits where the Pielisjoki meets Lake Pyhaselka in North Karelia, and it has run one of Europe's oldest rock festivals since 1971 on an island in the middle of town — started by local teenagers, not promoters, because nobody was going to bring the good bands out east for free. Insulation is not a luxury in a place with five months of winter.

You will carry it everywhere from an indoor court on a black February morning to that island in the middle of town in July, which is the whole of the argument for buying once. And by the way, a side compartment is exactly the right size for a bag of karjalanpiirakat, the rye-crusted Karelian pies you will be handed within about an hour of arriving.
