Start with the load path, because everything else follows from it. A control racquet has one structural problem to solve: hold its shape under impact while still telling your hand what happened. Stiffen it and you get stability but no information. Soften it and you get feel but the frame moves and your ball goes where it likes.

The Pure Strike 100 in the 16×19 layout solves it with geometry rather than brute stiffness, and the solution is genuinely clever.

Here are the tolerances. Length 27 inches. Strung weight 11.1 ounces, 315 grams; unstrung 10.6 ounces, 300 grams. Balance 4 points head light strung, swingweight 325 — that is where the plough-through comes from. Flex 63, which is soft for a frame this stable, and that combination is the whole engineering trick.

Head size 100 square inches, 645 square centimetres.

Beam width 21 mm, 23 mm, 21 mm, which is slim right round. String pattern 16 mains by 19 crosses, open, so spin remains available inside a control frame. Recommended tension 48 to 57 pounds.

Control Frame Technology combines the stability of a square-section beam with the dynamism of an elliptical one; FSI Control uses the string pattern and Woofer system to lengthen contact time for feel; NF2 Tech puts natural flax fibres in the lay-up to filter vibration and mute the sound. That is not a marketing sentence, that is a resolved problem — and Sokhumi, as it happens, is full of resolved problems still standing.

Sokhumi is full of structures worth reading. The cast iron lighthouse of 1861 was shipped here in pieces from France and bolted together — a kit of parts, engineered to be assembled by people who had not designed it, which is a discipline I admire enormously.

The 1947 railway station stands abandoned with its columns wrapped in vines, load-bearing elements now doing nothing but hold up plants. And the Besletsky Bridge is a single stone arch thrown up under Queen Tamar, still carrying load after eight centuries with no steel in it anywhere.

You will get use out of this everywhere from a hard court in the coastal humidity to an indoor court back home in February, and by the way, it is also perfect for a long lunch of ajika, mamalyga and smoked cheese, which is the local structural solution to a cold afternoon.
