Babolat RPM Blast 17 + RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set

Just found out hybrid strings are TWO strings in ONE racket and I nearly fell over. RPM Blast mains for Nadal-level spin, RPM Soft crosses for actual human comfort. If you are chasing topspin near Al-Anbar Stadium in Ramadi, this is your setup. Life-changing. I am normal about this.

Ramadi Barrage

Babolat RPM Blast 17 + RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set: First assignment! I wrote “tennis string near giant water thing,” then noticed the grown-up word is barrage; Ramadi Barrage is a water-control structure on the Euphrates near Ramadi, which is honestly a very sturdy background for string photos.

University of Anbar

Babolat RPM Blast 17 + RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set: I almost called this “the big school place,” but correction: the University of Anbar is a public university in Ramadi, established in 1987. The strings are not enrolled, but they are giving major freshman energy.

Al-Anbar Stadium

Babolat RPM Blast 17 + RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set: Stadium shot! Tiny panic, then fact check: Al-Anbar Stadium is a football stadium in Ramadi, so the product is technically visiting another sport and pretending it totally understands the rules.

Ramadi Railway Station

Babolat RPM Blast 17 + RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set: I labeled this “train tennis depot,” which is close but not professional; Ramadi Railway Station serves the city on Iraq’s railway network. The string set is waiting politely, because apparently products can have better platform manners than me.

Written for this world alone.

Okay so first of all I have to say that I was NOT prepared for how exciting strings were going to be and I feel like nobody warned me and that is genuinely unfair. I walked into my first shift thinking strings were just, like, the stuff in the middle of a racket, right? Wrong. SO wrong. I have been corrected multiple times already this week and I am taking notes.

Speaking of notes, I had a sticky note on my monitor that said something about Fort Lauderdale themed cardio tennis fitness — I think someone left it from a previous campaign — and I was like, is that relevant here? It is not relevant here. Moving on.

What IS relevant here is this absolutely fascinating thing called a hybrid string setup, which I will now explain to you because I just learned it twenty minutes ago and I am still buzzing.

So the Babolat RPM Blast 17 plus RPM Soft 16 Hybrid Tennis String Set is — and I need you to feel the weight of this — TWO different strings working together in ONE racket. The RPM Blast 17 goes in the mains, which are the vertical strings, and the RPM Soft 16 goes in the crosses, which are the horizontal ones. I am not ashamed.

I had to ask what mains and crosses meant.

Anyway, the RPM Blast 17 is a co-polyester string — that is a monofilament, which I also had to look up, it means one continuous strand of material — and it comes in at 1.25 millimeters in diameter, which is the 17 gauge, and it is the string that Rafael Nadal helped make famous which is a fact I have repeated to literally everyone in this building today.

The RPM Soft 16 is also a co-polyester but it is designed to be more comfortable and a bit more forgiving, and it sits at 1.30 millimeters, which is the 16 gauge, so it is slightly thicker than the Blast.

The set gives you enough string to do a full hybrid stringing job, which is apparently something experienced stringers do with their eyes half closed but which sounds to me like performing surgery.

The reason this hybrid combination is considered clever — and I want to be clear I am paraphrasing my manager here — is that you get the insane spin potential and control of the RPM Blast in your mains, because the mains do most of the work when you are hitting the ball, and then you get that softer, more arm-friendly feel from the RPM Soft in the crosses, which takes some of the stiffness off.

A tennis diplomat. I am going to use that phrase in my next conversation and I will report back.

So you are basically negotiating between power and comfort like a diplomat.

Now, I was asked to weave in the city of Ramadi, Iraq, because apparently good copy is specific and vivid and rooted in place, which is a note I wrote down and underlined. Ramadi is a city on the Euphrates River in the Al-Anbar Governorate, and it has some genuinely compelling spots. I have been reading about them.

The Ramadi Barrage is this impressive structure managing water flow on the Euphrates, which feels very engineering-brained, and I respect that deeply because stringing a racket is also an engineering problem, right?

The University of Anbar is there, and I imagine the players coming off a competitive practice session on a hot afternoon, maybe near Al-Anbar Stadium where sport is alive and serious business, walking past the old Ramadi Railway Station with its worn, purposeful bones, and they are thinking about exactly this problem: I want spin, I want control, but my arm is not going to last forever.

That is the player this hybrid is for. The serious recreational player, the club competitor, someone with a full swing and big topspin ambitions who also wants to finish the season with their elbow intact.

The set length is — okay I want to be precise here and I do not want to invent a number so I will say this: it is a string set, meaning it is cut and packaged to string one racket, not a reel, which I have also learned is a thing that exists and is a much larger amount of string on a spool for people who string a lot of rackets. This is the one-racket version.

Perfect if you are experimenting with hybrid setups for the first time or if you found a combination you love and you just want to keep coming back to it.

I think what gets me most excited — and I recognize that my threshold for excitement is currently very low because everything is new — is that this is not a product for beginners. This is a product for someone who has opinions. Someone who has stood on a court, hit a thousand balls, and thought, I need something more specific than what I have.

And the fact that Babolat built a product around that feeling, around the idea that two strings can do something together that neither could do alone, is just — I don't know, it is kind of beautiful. I said that out loud earlier and my manager gave me a look. But I stand by it. Go try this hybrid. Tell me what you think.

I will be here, still reading about strings, extremely enthusiastic, not at all sorry about it.
