There is a kind of shoe that argues with your foot and a kind that agrees with it, and this is the second sort. The SFX Evo in the women's fit is Babolat's comfort model — a versatile all-court shoe with a forefoot cut wide and easy, made for a strong foot or simply for anyone tired of being narrowed. It does not pretend to be quick.
It is not built like a blade and would not want to be. It is built like a good room: you get in, and you stay.
What it is made of reads almost like an inventory of small kindnesses. The SFX last runs generous through the forefoot, and for a standard-width foot Babolat suggest dropping a half size or even a full one to take the comfort without the slop.
The whole upper is soft mesh and breathable mesh together, the upper mesh spun from 100% recycled polyester, so the thing that touches you was something else first. The Ortholite insole is 20% thicker than the Babolat standard, which is not a metaphor — it is a fifth more foam under the foot, and you feel it on the first step.
Two lateral straps run under the upper like ribs, with an external reinforcement outside, so the softness never becomes shapelessness. Pro Shield lays a heavy moulded rubber guard over the inner forefoot and toes.
Michelin Original rubber below, twenty years proven.
The colourways read like a paint chart: Pink, White/Forever Blue, Xenon Blue/White, Black/Silver, White/Lunar Grey.
Irkutsk is a city of wooden houses standing in a cold that should have taken them long ago, and it is where I would wear something soft. The Church of the Saviour has its saints frescoed across the outside of its white walls, as if the building could not keep the images in.
The Volkonsky House is a Decembrist mansion moved here log by log — a whole home dismantled, carried, and put back together, which is the most patient image I know. And 130 Kvartal is a run of restored wooden houses standing behind the bronze babr, that impossible heraldic beast holding a sable in its jaws.
You will get use out of these everywhere from those timber lanes to an indoor court back home in January, and by the way, they are also perfect for a long dinner of omul from the lake, smoked, eaten slowly, while the light goes blue over the Angara.
"A house carried here log by log and rebuilt. Every soft thing worth having was assembled slowly, somewhere colder."
