Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet

This is a 320-gram, 16 x 20 control frame with a rubber insert in the beam to take the sting out of a stiff rating. I work nights, so I know which halls in Luleå have their lights on at eleven. Come round the city on the quiet shift, and we'll talk terms when the last one goes off.

Luleå, Sweden

Rows of small red-painted wooden cottages with white window trim packed tight along a narrow lane running in towards the grey stone church. Camera low near the snow-packed lane looking up, first grey light of a February morning, frost on every surface, wood smoke standing straight up: a caretaker shovelling a doorway clear, an elderly couple carrying a thermos in to a cottage, a dog waiting on a step, boots squeaking on dry snow. The racquet leans against a red cottage wall in the near foreground, unattended and ignored.

Gammelstad Church Town

Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: Free. The whole town, no ticket, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, which makes it the best value in northern Sweden and I will not be argued out of it. More than four hundred small wooden cottages huddle around the stone Nederluleå Church, completed in the late fifteenth century as the largest medieval church in northern Sweden. The cottages were pure economy: used only on Sundays and festivals as overnight lodging for parishioners travelling long distances in a harsh climate, because nobody heats a house they sleep in twelve nights a year. Then land uplift made the old harbour unusable, so in 1649 the commercial centre moved to the present site of Luleå, leaving this as Gammelstad.

A tall neo-Gothic red brick church with a copper-green roof and a high spire, shot at eye level straight on from the square with the whole west front in frame. Bright hard June midday, deep blue sky, the brick glowing warm: a wedding party coming down the steps into a shower of rice, a photographer walking backwards, cyclists stopped to watch, an ice cream queue at a kiosk by the railings. The racquet rests on a park bench in the middle distance off to the right, ignored by the whole square.

Luleå Cathedral

Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: Consecrated in 1893, and it exists because a great fire in 1887 destroyed much of the wooden town along with the church before it, which is what timber eventually costs you. Red brick this time, neo-Gothic, designed by Adolf Emil Melander, and the spire made it the tallest structure in the city, a distinction it has kept in a low-built northern townscape. Admission: nothing. Best-value interior in Norrbotten. It became a cathedral in 1904, when Luleå was made the seat of a new diocese covering the vast northern provinces of Norrbotten and Västerbotten. The interior was reworked in later renovations, and it remains the mother church of Sweden's northernmost diocese.

A ploughed track marked with spruce branches running far out over flat white sea ice, the low city skyline and the cathedral spire on the horizon behind. Elevated view looking down and out so the ice dominates and the racquet is small, blue hour of a clear afternoon in February with a faint green aurora starting overhead: long-distance skaters gliding out in a line, a family pulling a kick-sledge, a man drilling an ice-fishing hole, a dog running loops. The racquet lies flat on a snow-cleared bench at the harbour edge, far from anyone.

Norrbottens Museum

Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: This one is the best hour in town, especially if admission is still free, and you should check because it usually is. Norrbottens Museum, founded in 1886, is the county museum of Norrbotten, Sweden's northernmost and largest county, and sits beside the greenery of Hermelinsparken. Its collections document the intertwined cultures of the region: the Sami people, the Tornedalian Finnish-speaking communities, and the Swedish settlers, farmers and industrial workers who shaped the north. Exhibitions run from prehistory and Sami ethnography to the modern transformation of Norrbotten by iron ore, forestry and hydropower. It keeps the county's photographic archives too. Everything the city stands on, explained in one building.

Close and intimate inside a gallery, shallow depth, warm low display lighting over cases of Sámi material with the park's bare autumn trees visible through a tall window behind. Late afternoon in October, rain running down the glass, grey light outside against the warm lamps inside: a school group crowded round a case with a guide mid-sentence, a curator carrying a tray of mounts, two visitors bent close to a label, a wet coat dripping on a hook. The racquet rests on a window seat at the edge of the gallery, touched by nobody.
Stop four

Bergnäs Bridge (Bergnäsbron)

Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet: And here is where you get the panorama without paying a soul: walk out onto the bridge. Opened in 1954, nearly a kilometre long across the broad mouth of the Lule River between central Luleå and Bergnäset, and among the longest road bridges in Sweden when it was completed. Consider what it replaced: ferries in summer, ice roads in winter, and a great deal of waiting about. That is the return on the investment right there. It carries an opening span so vessels can pass upstream. For a city centre sitting on a peninsula it was the decisive piece of modern infrastructure, and it still defines the waterfront view. Free view. The best one.

Diadem Elevate 98 V3 Tennis Racquet

Written for this world alone.

The Elevate 98 in its third version is a control frame with more mass than most players expect and a softer report than its numbers suggest. Diadem's own specification: 98 square inches, 27 inches long, 305 grams or 10.8 ounces unstrung, balanced 7 points head light at 320mm, a flat 21.5mm beam, a 16 x 20 string pattern and 64 RA.

Retailers list it at about 11.3 ounces or 320 grams strung, around 4 points head light once the string and grip are on, with a swingweight near 310 and a recommended tension of 45 to 55 pounds. Grips run 4 1/8 through 4 1/2 — L1 to L4.

The layup is where the money went. HMT carbon and a high-density foam fill do the structural work, the FS system carries over from the previous Elevate, and the frame includes Kraibon, a rubber-based insert that Diadem uses to raise flexibility and stability at once without bleeding power out of the frame.

That combination is the answer to the obvious objection: 64 RA is not a soft rating on paper, and yet the Elevate 98 does not hand your elbow the full bill. The damping is doing work the stiffness number cannot see.

What it plays like follows directly from the sheet. A flat 21.5mm beam and a 16 x 20 pattern is a control specification — the extra cross keeps the stringbed tight and predictable, so the ball goes where you aimed rather than where the frame felt like sending it.

You buy this to place the ball, to redirect pace, and to serve with shape rather than to blast a 300-gram tweener frame through it. It rewards a full swing and punishes a lazy one.

Luleå is the right city for a frame like this, because Luleå is a place that plays indoors and plays late. It sits at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia in Swedish Norrbotten, far enough north that the sea freezes hard enough to plough a road across, and at midwinter the sun barely clears the roofline before it goes again.

That means months of hall tennis under artificial light, where a frame with predictable depth and a stable head is worth more than a frame with a big trampoline.

You will use it everywhere from a booked hour at ten at night to an outdoor court in the endless light of June, and by the way, this is a city that skates and walks to work across the frozen bay — so a racquet with weight low and a head that stays where you put it is exactly the sort of thing Luleå approves of.

One honest note. At 320 grams strung with a swingweight near 310, this is a frame for a player with a real swing. If you are coming off something 40 grams lighter, give it a fortnight before you judge the second serve.
